The Football League 1888/89 was the first season of the highest English football league . It began on September 8, 1888, ended on April 20, 1889 and produced Preston North End, the first national champion in the history of English football. “PNE”, which won the first ever double in the FA Cup in the same year , won by a superior eleven points ahead of Aston Villa and remained undefeated for the entire season. There were no relegated clubs, as the clubs in the bottom four final table places emerged as winners from a re-election procedure.
A total of 289 players were used, with Preston North End with 18 the fewest and Everton with 35 the most players in league games. For 130 of the 289 players, the 1888/89 season was the first and last season in the Football League. 23 players were able to play all 22 league games of their club.
The following table lists all players who played in a league game for Preston North End during the 1888/89 season. It must be noted that in English football a minimum number of games is usually required in order to receive the official championship medal. Since there was uncertainty about the specific regulation before the introduction of the Premier League, all players who presumably did not receive a championship medal due to their low contribution were marked with an asterisk (*). The number of missions and the goals scored are given in brackets.
The regulations of the Football League stipulated that the four worst-placed teams had to stand for re-election at the end of the season. Voting took place at the annual general meeting of the Football League, at which new admissions were also decided. The following distribution of votes ensured that all four Football League teams that were positioned at the end of the league were retained in the 1889/90 season:
Bob Jardine scored five goals for Notts County against Burnley FC on October 27, 1888.
The Bolton Wanderers were the only team to score at least one goal in every game.
For safety reasons, the Football League banned the floodlight systems used since 1878 from the stadiums. The league's first floodlit game took place in February 1956.
