The 2019–21 season (originally planned as the 2019/20 season ) of the Regionalliga Bayern is the eighth season of the Football Regionalliga Bayern and the twelfth season of the Football Regionalliga as the fourth highest division in Germany. It was opened on July 11, 2019 with FV Illertissen's game against FC Memmingen (2-0) and should end on May 23, 2020. The season was interrupted by a winter break between December 1, 2019 and March 6, 2020, and again on March 13 due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
The continuation is possible from September 1 at the earliest, after the resumption of play, the season with 17 teams (after the departure of the league leaders Türkgücü Munich, who has been registered for promotion ) is to be ended by spring 2021, which means that a 2020/21 season will be canceled .
On March 13, 2020, the BFV announced that it would suspend match operations in the Regionalliga Bayern until at least March 23, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany. The suspension was then extended to at least April 19. Even before the deadline had expired, the DFB announced the final decision of the 21 regional associations to suspend play from the regional league downwards until further notice. According to a decision of April 23, the season is to continue from September 1, 2020, but the exact continuation date is not yet known. Furthermore, according to a decision of the association's board of May 8th, the team that was at the top of the table at the end of the registration period for the 3rd league (June 22nd) rose to the top. The same applies to participation in the DFB Cup , for which second teams from higher-class clubs are not allowed to play.
At the end of May, FC Bayern Munich announced that it would provide a total of 360,000 euros, which should also be distributed among the 18 participants as financial aid. The FC Augsburg renounced the share of 20,000 euros for its U23, the SpVgg Greuther Fuerth gave their share plus another 10,000 euros to 24 unterklassige clubs from the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region on.
Resumption of gaming operations
The continuation of the season was also held at an association meeting on June 4, 2020. In addition, a transfer window is to open between June 30 and August 31, 2020 before the game is resumed. Since the modalities of the winter transfer window apply, the releasing club must always give the player who wants to change the game clearance, otherwise a six-month ban would apply.
The restart, which is possible from September 1, should start with 17 participants, whereas the promoted team Türkgücü Munich , who was previously registered on June 22, 2020 (key date), will take part in the 3rd league 2020/21, which will take place at the same time . After the end of the season, four participants who applied for a third division license should determine a winner in play-off mode in spring 2021. This winner should then compete against the team of the Regionalliga Nord 2020/21 registered for promotion for promotion to the 3rd division in 2021/22 and take part in the DFB Cup 2021/22 .
The winter break was set for the period between November 16, 2020 and March 19, 2021, at the end of the season there should be a permanent relegation team and two participants in relegation relegation games. Also, before the resumption, the holding of a league cup was confirmed, which will open on September 5, 2020 and end on April 13, 2021. The winner will play together with the participant determined in spring 2021 in the third division promotion games in the DFB-Pokal 2020/21.
On July 23, the BFV confirmed the cancellation of the games with the participation of Türkgücü.
