Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas ( GTA: SA for short ) is the regular fifth installment in the video game series Grand Theft Auto from Rockstar Games , which was released on October 26, 2004 in the United States and on October 29, 2004 in Europe for the PlayStation 2 was first published. The Windows and Xbox versions both followed on June 7, 2005 in the USA and on June 10, 2005 in Europe. At the end of 2010, the game was also released for computers with macOS and in December 2013 for smartphones and tablets with Android and Apple iOS and in January 2014 for Windows Phone . Furthermore, technically optimized new editions appeared on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas can also be played on Xbox One and as an emulation on PlayStation 4 thanks to downward compatibility . The action adventure with racing game elements and open world had been sold over 22 million times worldwide by 2008. According to Kotaku, the game had sold over 27.5 million copies by 2011.

Gameplay

General

Mainly the game consists of a combination of shooting, driving and flight sequences. The tasks for the player can be divided into three categories: main missions, side missions and free play.

Both in the missions and outside the missions, the police react to criminal acts committed by the player. The more crimes the player commits in short intervals, the higher his wanted level (represented by stars) and the more police officers and other units pursue the player.

The main missions form the plot of the game and therefore a chronological order. To do this, the player has to visit various clients in the game world. In the following short cutscenes , the plot is continued and the problem to be solved is described. The player then has to solve the mission with weapons and / or vehicles that he finds in the game world or has already found.

The game follows the open world principle , so the player is not forced to focus exclusively on the missions. The game world offers various employment opportunities. For example, the player can intentionally commit crimes to provoke a police chase or just explore the game world.

There is also a two-player mode in the console versions. In this, however, the two players cannot move freely, but are tied to the same location, i.e. that is, they can always be seen together in the same picture. This mode has been removed in the PC version, as it is not possible to use two mice and two keyboards effectively on one computer.

Innovations

In addition to the previous skills in the GTA series, the character (Carl Johnson, "CJ" for short) is able to crouch and climb over walls and fences, if these are not too high. Together with the new ability to swim and dive, "CJ", unlike earlier versions, is able to reach every point in the game world from the start. However, when he reaches another city he is immediately searched for by the police, which makes real exploration difficult.

The character values are also new. So the player can improve the skills of his character with a weapon or a vehicle if he uses them permanently. The strength of the character can be increased through weight training such as weightlifting and combat training, and the stamina through endurance sports such as cycling, running and swimming. With a martial arts teacher, new attacks can also be trained, such as an all-round kick or kicking on opponents who are already on the ground (the latter has been removed from the German version).

The life energy can be increased by eating like in the previous one. Fatty food causes the character to gain weight and thus can no longer jump so high, making some missions almost impossible. The extra pounds can be worked off through endurance sports. This game is the first in the series in which the character can starve.

Furthermore, the appearance of the character can be influenced. For example, you can go to a hairdresser and buy new clothes. The items of clothing can be combined as desired in the hiding places. It is also possible to have the character tattooed.

A small change to Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is available for real estate: Bonus weapons that you get through some bonus missions are only available at one property per city. There are a total of twelve bonus weapons, which are distributed in three hiding places. All other properties only serve as a storage point or refuge from the police.

Furthermore, with GTA: San Andreas in the console version, the controls have been changed: For example, the viewing direction can be changed while walking or driving, i. That is, the viewing direction and the walking direction can differ. In the case of weapons with which manual aiming is possible, the character can be moved. In the previous games, manual aiming was only possible while standing.

Side missions

Side missions are not part of the storyline and can therefore be performed at any time after they are unlocked. The number of side missions has increased significantly compared to its predecessors. Money can be won or earned in all missions. When a certain level of the respective additional missions is reached, the character gets skills or extras.

For the first time, there is also a mission (conquering enemy corridor areas) that must be partially completed so that the main story can continue. This mission is basically a variation on the rampages from the previous versions.

For bonus weapons in the hiding places, a collection campaign must be carried out per city this time, namely the spraying of graffiti in Los Santos, taking photos of sights in San Fierro and collecting horseshoes in Las Venturas. Oysters, on the other hand, have to be hunted all over San Andreas; as a reward, the character's attractiveness increases.

In addition to the side missions known from its predecessors, such as police, fire brigade and taxi missions, there is another vehicle-related task in the game: Driving schools for cars, motorcycles, boats as well as planes and helicopters, whereby only completing the flight school is required for the continuation of the main story. The character itself can also participate in sporting competitions such as B. Participate in triathlons and car races.

Real money can also be earned through other newly introduced part-time jobs, such as truck drivers or couriers. After a successful career, the respective companies are taken over by the player and bring regular income. Additional criminal part-time jobs include night raids through houses.

To pass the time, the character can play arcade games and billiards on machines in bars or basketball on sports fields . The player can also play games of chance such as blackjack and roulette in casinos or take part in horse-drawn bets in betting shops and thereby increase or lose their money.

In addition, “CJ” can build relationships with several friends: he gets to know two of them in the course of the plot, the others one meets outside of the story. The girlfriends can be carried out and make certain beauty requirements on the character. If the girlfriends are successfully executed several times, the player receives additional extras again.

After all, the player can prove his sense of rhythm at a lowrider meeting and in the disco. The latter is also required of the girlfriends.

crime

If the player commits a crime, the police will look for him. The more serious the crime, the more units are looking for it. There are a total of six wanted levels, which are represented by stars. If there is a star, the character is searched for and arrested. From the second onwards, the police force increases and the police officers try to shoot the player. With three stars there are occasional police barriers and the player is followed not only on the ground but also from the air by police helicopter. With four stars, the first special forces such as police trucks are added, with five stars the FBI appears and with six stars the military is also shown with u. a. Tanks and fighters , depending on where the player is.

Game world

San Andreas is a fictional state on the west coast of the United States, which is modeled after California and partly also Nevada and Arizona . The game world is five to six times larger than that of the predecessor GTA: Vice City . San Andreas is home to three major cities based on Los Angeles , San Francisco, and Las Vegas ( Los Santos , San Fierro, and Las Venturas ). A large road network, a railroad and an airplane line connect the cities with one another. The state is partly very hilly, there is fertile farmland, canyons, mountains, rivers, deserts and forests. There are also twelve smaller villages and towns outside the cities.

In San Andreas there are many references to or parodies of real existing sights and places such as B. Beverly Hills ("Rodeo"), Compton (Ganton), Inglewood (Idlewood), Venice Beach (Verona Beach), Hollywood and the Hollywood Sign ("Vinewood"), the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco ("Gant Bridge") ), Area 51 (Area 69), the Hoover Dam ("Sherman Dam") southeast of the tourist stronghold of Las Vegas, Mulholland Drive , the casinos of Las Vegas or an aircraft graveyard modeled after the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group .

This time there are no hermetically sealed areas within the game world. The player can go to any location from the beginning. Although the access roads to some cities are not immediately cleared, the cities can be easily reached by water or air. However, entering the areas that have not yet been activated causes a high wanted level, which can only be reduced by leaving the area.

Gangs

There are a variety of gangs in San Andreas. They are always armed, react negatively to the player and try to attack them (does not apply to the Grove Street Families and Triads ). The gang war side missions can be played against the Ballas and Vagos in Los Santos.

  • Grove Street Family: The Gang of Protagonist Carl Johnson. Founded in the 1970s, wearing green and by the end of the game the most influential gang in Los Santos.
  • Ballas: Arch enemy of the Grove Street Families and in constant combat against each other. Founded in the 1970s and with purple as a distinguishing mark. Together with the Los Santos Vagos, they control the cocaine trade in Los Santos.
  • Varrios Los Aztecas: This gang is led by Cesar, who has a relationship with CJ's sister Kendl. Despite these circumstances, apart from a few missions, they are no friendlier to the Grove Street Families . Her gait color is turquoise.
  • Los Santos Vagos: Mexican gang that seems to be allied with the Ballas. Their gait color is yellow.
  • Russian Mafia: They only appear for a short time and appear to be allied with the Ballas, Vagos and Rifas and are supposed to be supplying the Ballas with weapons in return for vehicle deliveries. You can only find them in some missions.
  • Triads: The blind leader Wu Zi Mu ("Woozie") is fighting the Da Nang Boys. Furthermore, the Triads run a casino in Las Venturas called "Four Dragons", which CJ takes over during the game.
  • Da Nang Boys: Vietnamese gang that tries to evict the Triads from San Fierro and is seen as very violent.
  • Loco Syndicate: drug syndicate consisting of Big Smoke, Ryder, Jizzy B, T-Bone Mendez and Mike Toreno, which is destroyed by CJ.
  • San Fierro Rifa: Mexican gang in San Fierro. Her gait color is turquoise. The Rifas also work for the Loco Syndicate. This gang is arguably the least violent gang in all of San Andreas. When the player attacks them, they mostly run away.
  • Sindaccos: This mafia clan comes from Liberty City and, together with the Leones and Forellis , owns the Caligula's Casino in Las Venturas. These are already known from the previous parts.

weapons

There is a large arsenal of weapons available in GTA: San Andreas , which can be acquired by picking up or buying from an Ammu Nation store. You can only have one weapon of each weapon type.

The rocket launchers can only be fired while standing. Only one submachine gun can be used for a drive-by shoot.

vehicles

Bicycles are new to this game. These can be driven in a similar way to motorcycles, but have the advantage that they can be used to jump over obstacles. In addition to cars, motorcycles, bicycles, boats, airplanes (including a mixture of Harrier and F-16 ) and helicopters (including Apache ), more unusual vehicles are now also available (e.g. combine harvesters , monster trucks , hovercraft , dump trucks , lawn tractors, cement trucks , Go-kart, tow truck , parachute and even a jetpack ). As in all GTA parts, there are numerous types of cars and eight types of motorcycles.

In tuning workshops it is also possible to equip vehicles with various optical improvements or to convert them to low riders . An increase in performance is only possible by installing a nitrous oxide injection .

action

story

The action begins in 1992. The protagonist Carl Johnson ("CJ"), an African American , returns to Los Santos ( modeled after the real Los Angeles ) after his mother was murdered. He lived in Liberty City for the past five years to get away from his criminal past in Los Santos. Hardly having arrived in his old homeland, the three corrupt police officers Frank Tenpenny, Eddie Pulaski and Jimmy Hernandez blame him for the murder of Officer Ralph Pendelbury, which they themselves committed because he threatened to reveal their machinations. CJ also finds that his old gang has broken up over drug problems and internal disputes. In the following, he tries, with the help of his brother, Sean Sweet Johnson, to free his "hood" (neighborhood) from drug trafficking and to restore his old gang. But shortly before the Grove Street Families reunite , they fall into a trap: some of his old gang members have betrayed the ideals of the gang and are now teaming up with Officer Tenpenny. CJ is betrayed and has to leave town while his brother Sweet is arrested.

With the help of Cesar Vialpando, his sister Kendl's friend, CJ succeeds in opening a car repair shop in San Fierro and in the further course of the story acquiring a car dealership. These acts lead to his getting to know Mike Toreno over time. He is an agent of a government agency and promises CJ to help him if he does some jobs for him in return. These assignments also lead CJ to Las Venturas as the game progresses, where he works his way up to co-owner of a casino, and finally back to Los Santos, where he becomes the manager of rapper Madd Dogg.

Toreno keeps his promise and arranges for Sweet to be released. His brother is not impressed by CJ's successes and accuses him of not having taken care of the "Hood". CJ has no choice but to deal with the gangs and Officer Frank Tenpenny again. Tenpenny is ultimately tried but acquitted. This causes riots to break out in the city as Tenpenny is notorious as a corrupt police officer across the city. In this situation, CJ succeeds in killing the gang members who betrayed him and seriously injuring Officer Tenpenny in a chase. Tenpenny then dies as a result of his injuries.

The story is based on African American rap and ghetto films such as " Menace II Society ", " New Jack City ", " Boyz N the Hood ", " Training Day " or " Colors - colors of violence ". Within the missions there are parallels to the plot or characters from these films as well as allusions to real events, such as the riots and gang wars in Los Angeles.

Client

In the course of the plot, the player encounters characters for whom the main character CJ can do jobs. In addition to the parameter respect, he usually receives some money, which in turn opens up new opportunities for him in the game itself.

Los Santos I

  • Sean "Sweet" Johnson: He's the brother of CJ. It is in his interest to bring the Ganton neighborhood and the surrounding areas back under full control of the Grove Street Families . He doesn't think much of CJ at the start of the game, as he disappeared from San Andreas five years before the game's storyline and went to Liberty City to get out of the "filth". But little by little he rebuilds trust in his brother. The first assignments from Sweet serve to explain the principles of the game (hairdressers, meals, climbing, graffiti, weapon handling, drive-by shoots, lowrider meetings, vehicle tuning, vehicle repainting and buying clothes). The final missions in Los Santos are about the final takeover of Los Santos. This is also where the gang war side missions begin. In the final mission in Los Santos, CJ and Sweet are betrayed.
  • Lance "Ryder" Wilson: He's a gang member of the Grove Street Families . These orders are primarily about the procurement of weapons. His character looks disturbed and he secretly works with the Ballas. Ryder is later killed by CJ. The American rapper Eazy-E served as a model for the appearance of the character Ryder .
  • Melvin "Big Smoke" Harris: He's also a gang member of the Grove Street Families . He's obviously doing business with the police and the ballas, which he tries to deny. The highlight is the mission "Just Business", which consists of a violent exchange of fire and a motorcycle chase. In this chase, a truck jumps off a bridge into the water channel where the chase takes place. This is a nod to the movie Terminator 2 - Judgment Day . In the game's final mission, he is killed in battle as a traitor by CJ.
  • Jeffrey "OG Loc" Cross: A friend of the Grove Street Families , but not taken very seriously since renaming himself OG Loc. Believing himself to be a rising rapper, he hires CJ to harm and replace his rival Madd Dogg.
  • Frank Tenpenny: Until he went into hiding, he kept appearing as a client. While on a mission, CJ is reported to set a house on fire. When he notices that there is still a girl in the house, he saves her. She becomes his first girlfriend in the game.

The Badlands (transition to San Fierro)

  • Frank Tenpenny: The police have arrested Sweet and tell CJ that he shouldn't return to Los Santos. CJ himself was not arrested for carrying out assignments for the police, especially Frank Tenpenny. There is only one mission to complete for him in Angel Pine, Badlands: the murder of a witness guarded by the FBI.
  • Cesar Vialpando: He is the boyfriend of CJ's sister Kendl and the leader of the Varrios los Aztecas . Through him, CJ met the next client Wu Zi Mu ("Woozie") and Cesar's cousin "Catalina".
  • Catalina: She is the cousin of Cesar Vialpando and an old friend from GTA III . She is looking for a quick buck and uses her dominant streak to force CJ to help her. To do this, she and CJ raid various shops and banks. Although she allegedly falls in love with CJ, she leaves him after a short time to run away to Liberty City with the character from GTA III . In the timeline of the GTA series, the story of the predecessor GTA III begins here . CJ is only haunted by her threatening phone calls now and then.
  • Wu Zi Mu (nickname: Woozie): He is the leader of the Triads from San Fierro. His entire appearance suggests a smart businessman. He runs the Four Dragons Casino in Las Venturas. Although he is blind, he calls car racing his great passion. After a race, he offers CJ to work for him in San Fierro.
  • The Truth: The Truth is a typical 60s / 70s hippie that CJ met through Frank Tenpenny. He has a lot of knowledge of the political machinations in San Andreas, but seems rather confused because of his relationship with drugs. He leads CJ to San Fierro and brings him together with other clients.

San Fierro

  • Cesar Vialpando: Cesar Vialpando happened to be able to make out the delivery dates for drug couriers from Big Smoke and notify CJ to intercept them. These missions only take place on certain days and are not relevant to the course of the game. As part of the work at the workshop, Cesar compiles a list of cars that CJ has to “get”. These missions are not important for the game, as they are only activated after successfully completing the driving school.
  • CJ: For the first time in the game, the main character's interests are represented through multiple missions. Together with Cesar Vialpando, Kendl , The Truth and a few of his friends, CJ tries to turn an old gas station into a car repair shop so that he can finally stand on his own two feet.
  • Frank Tenpenny: CJ has to hide drugs in the trunk of a car owned by a prosecutor. He is then arrested for drug possession. In addition, CJ must get a curious reporter and his informant (a police officer) out of the way.
  • Loco Syndicate: Big Smoke, Ryder, Jizzy B, T-Bone Mendez and agent Mike Toreno have joined forces to form this drug syndicate. First, CJ earns pimp Jizzy B's trust to scout out how the Syndicate is built. When the connections are clear, he smashes the Loco Syndicate and thus stops the drug deliveries to Big Smoke.
  • Wu Zi Mu: The triads under the leadership of Wu Zi Mu, or Woozie for short , are fighting the Vietnamese Da Nang Boys .
  • Zero: He's a friend of The Truth and obsessed with his passion for model vehicles. He fights fiercely with a person named Berkley for number one in the model building scene. These missions have no direct influence on the game.

Desert (transition to Las Venturas)

  • Mike Toreno: After it was discovered that Mike Toreno was working as an undercover agent for a government organization in the Loco Syndicate, he offers CJ to get his brother Sweet out of jail if CJ "does a few things" for him, which are loud are of the highest national and international interest to him. In the course of these assignments, CJ learned how to fly airplanes and helicopters.
  • The Truth: The Truth asks CJ to help him get behind the government's most secret projects, such as a jetpack, which will later be available to the player.

Las Venturas

  • Wu Zi Mu (Woozie) and Salvatore Leone: This storyline is about the disputes between the three Mafia families from Liberty City and the Triads . CJ becomes a partner in the Four Dragons casino and helps the Triads (i.e. Woozie) with their problems with the Sindaccos. The Leone family, on the other hand, has problems with the trout. Interesting here are the appearances of many characters known from the predecessors as well as the short trip to Liberty City in the Saint Mark's Bistro . The player can also rob the Casino Caligula's Palace , which belongs to the three Mafia families. After the bank robbery, CJ ends up on Salvatore Leone's death list.
  • Frank Tenpenny: In order to prevent investigations against himself, he hires CJ to steal evidence. He then calls on his partner Pulaski to kill a traitorous colleague and also CJ. However, CJ manages to escape and to catch and kill Pulaski after a chase.
  • Madd Dogg: Madd Dogg is a rapper who was robbed by CJ and OG Loc in Los Santos. CJ saves him from attempting suicide and becomes his manager. After CJ recaptured Madd Dogg's villa in Los Santos, the final storylines take place again in Los Santos.

Los Santos / Finale Missions

  • Mike Toreno: After CJ completes one last assignment for him, Toreno arranges for CJ's brother Sweet to be released.
  • CJ: Tries to get Madd Dogg's career going again by forcing OG Loc to abandon his career.
  • Sweet: In the final missions, he decides to clean up Los Santos with his true friends. Here Officer Frank Tenpenny is found by Sweet and dies after a long chase in a car accident.

Technical improvements

With GTA: San Andreas , some technical improvements have been implemented, such as the dynamic real-time calculation of shadows and the more realistic simulation of weather phenomena such as fog, sandstorms and thunderstorms up to the flickering of the air in extreme heat. The visibility in the landscape is two to four times higher than with its predecessors. The loading screens that appeared in the earlier versions when the player switched from one island to another could be avoided.

Modifications

As in all parts of the GTA 3D series, elements of the game world, such as buildings, entire parts of the city and landscape and, above all, vehicles can be exchanged using freeware replacement from the Internet. Other modifications add functions such as new camera perspectives or the ability to purchase new fuel at gas stations for a fee.

Since the game was released, thousands of vehicles have been created or converted from their predecessors or other PC games. Commercial add-ons are meanwhile not possible, as original files would have to be replaced, which commercial manufacturers are not allowed to do. In addition, there are various files, so-called blood patches , which can be used to convert the content of the German PC version into an uncut version.

As was already the case with the other 3D parts of the GTA series, modifications developed for GTA: San Andreas that expand the game with a multiplayer mode. Well-known projects that pursue this goal are, for example, “Multi Theft Auto” (MTA) or “San Andreas Multiplayer” (SA-MP).

Other notable modifications are the so-called Berlin Mod and GTA: United. With the Berlin-Mod, the San Andreas game environment is replaced by a replica of the city of Berlin that is as true to the original as possible. In GTA: United, on the other hand, the cities of Liberty City and Vice City from the previous games GTA III and GTA Vice City are brought into the new San Andreas Engine.

Hot coffee

A “Hot Coffee” mod for GTA: San Andreas caused a sensation in the USA and Australia in July 2005 . "Hot Coffee" unlocks an interactive sex mini-game that was already included in the source code of the original program and had only been deactivated by the developers. Therefore it is possible to make this mini-game accessible on the console versions with the help of a cheat system. Because of this mod, the game in the USA was raised from the age recommendation "Mature" ("from 17") to "Adults Only" ("from 18"). The effect of this classification can be equated with the consequences of an indexing in Germany, since all large American retail chains refuse to offer a game classified as "AO" for sale because this classification is normally only used for games with pornographic content. When it comes to reviewing video games, the USA is considered to be very sensitive to sexual representations, while depictions of violence in games often attract little attention. In Australia the game was banned a short time later. It had previously been classified as “MA 15+” (“from 15”). In Germany, the classification ( USK 16) remained unchanged, as a cut version was already offered compared to the US version, but which still allowed the sex scenes to be activated.

Rockstar Games started reprogramming the game shortly after the decision. The US retail chains took the old version off the shelves and only wanted to offer the new version. On August 9, 2005, the patch for the PC version was released, which among other things has the task of deactivating the "Hot Coffee" mod and completely removing the corresponding program code from the game.

Allusions

GTA: San Andreas contains a variety of allusions, both to predecessors within the game series and to popular films, real locations and political and social circumstances, especially in the USA. In addition, in the world of San Andreas one encounters verbal or figurative allusions to a wide variety of sexual content.

Movies

Similar to its predecessors GTA III and GTA: Vice City , film scenes are re-enacted or satirized every now and then in the main missions. So z. E.g. in the mission Just Business a scene from Terminator 2 - Day of Reckoning is recreated and some scenes from the mission Breaking the Bank at Caligula's are reminiscent of the movie Ocean's Eleven .

vehicles

Almost all vehicles in the game are modeled on vehicles that existed before the game. For example, the Huntley looks astonishingly similar to the Range Rover , the Sultan is based on the Mitsubishi Lancer and the camperbus mirrors the VW T1 .

places

The three major cities of Los Santos, San Fierro and Las Venturas are based on the cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco and Las Vegas. The respective cities were reproduced on a greatly reduced scale with famous identifying features such as buildings, districts and their geographical shape, but as with the cities, fictitious names were always used.

Examples of real-world buildings and places that can be found in San Andreas:

Outside the big cities, too, you can always find places with real models, for example Area 69 , which alludes to Area 51, the Sherman Dam , which is modeled on the Hoover Dam, or the ghost town of Las Brujas , which is based on the real one Bodie ghost town is ajar .

Political and social circumstances

GTA: San Andreas contains many allusions to social and political circumstances, especially, but not exclusively, the United States. These allusions can be understood as either glorification or criticism.

Examples:

  • Violence: Conversations and radio spots about violence and violent topics can be heard over and over again throughout the game world. Violence is also often presented as the first choice for conflict resolution.
  • Guns: The availability of guns in the United States is reflected in San Andreas. Weapons of all kinds can be bought with the necessary money in several gun shops called Ammu-Nation or found scattered across the game world. In addition, passers-by often respond to possible attacks by the playing figure with force of arms, mostly firearms or striking weapons.
  • Racism: Allusions to racism can be found in verbal form in some dialogues between passers-by, which often consist of randomly mixed up sentences. The xenophobia that exists in many small American towns is also illustrated in the smaller towns in San Andreas. Here you can find bars with the sentence “Locals only - We don't like your type 'round here” written above the entrance. “Only for locals - we don't want something like you here”).
  • Sects: In the USA, but also worldwide, sects disguised as free churches are satirized in GTA: San Andreas through the "Epsilon Program".

Real events

Real events are also processed in GTA: SA . These were chosen due to the early 90s that GTA: SA plays in:

  • Gangs: With the gang wars between the Ballas and the Grove Street Families , but also the Los Santos Vagos and the Varrios Los Aztecas , the bloody wars between the Bloods and Crips are depicted in Los Angeles. The Los Santos Vagos and the Varrios Los Aztecas are representative for the Mara Salvatrucha and the 18th Street Gang . It should be noted here, however, that these gangs, in contrast to their real "role models", are reduced to violence against each other, i.e. defending and conquering city districts, as well as to the distinguishing feature of colored clothing. No gang rituals or the like are mentioned. Only the relationship to drugs, especially hashish, is shown in the form of joints. The use of crack is cited in the initial missions as the reason for the breaking up of the Grove Street Families and portrayed as negative by campaigns against the dealers.
  • Los Angeles Riots: Civil war-like riots break out in the final missions following the acquittal of corrupt police officer Frank Tenpenny. These are a reference to the 1992 Los Angeles riots .
  • Communism : Although the heyday of communism in the game is over, anti-communist content can also be found in GTA: San Andreas . For example, commercials against mass transportation can be heard on the radio, which are condemned as a symptom of the incipient spread of communism. Anticommunist backgrounds are also mentioned more often in Agent Mike Toreno's missions.
  • Earthquake : In San Fierro there is a collapsed section of a motorway next to the Carver Bridge (Bay Bridge). This is a reference to Interstate 880, which collapsed during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake . During the earthquake, the Bay Bridge, which is located right next to it, was also badly damaged. The area on which CJ's workshop is located is also known as the rubble area after an earthquake raged there.

predecessor

In GTA: San Andreas there are also allusions to the two predecessors GTA III and GTA: Vice City :

GTA III: The client during the Badlands section, Catalina, is the same Catalina who raids a bank with the game character of the title at the beginning of GTA III . After the affair with CJ in San Andreas, Claude, the main character controlled by the player in GTA III , appears as a silent driver and new friend of Catalina at the illegal car races and CJ learns of Catalina's plans to travel to Liberty City with Claude. In Las Venturas you will also meet well-known characters. The Italian mafia, which has spread in Las Venturas, is under the leadership of the same family that also appears as the client in GTA III .

GTA: Vice City: Zero's shop in San Fierro has action figures of the game character Tommy Vercetti and his companion Lance Vance . You also meet Ken Rosenberg, a lawyer and client from GTA: Vice City , as well as two of his friends, the somewhat crazy Englishman named Kent Paul, who is the manager of the band "Love Fist" in GTA: Vice City , and Maccer, who is the Exhibitionism tends to. The V-Rock Hotel in Las Venturas plays on the Vice City radio station V-Rock . In addition, both a figure of Avery Carrington and a figure of the porn actress Candy Suxxx are each attached to a casino, and there is also a poster of Candy Suxxx in the house owner's bedroom in the home invasion mission of the house to be broken into. With the Hot Coffee Mod activated, you can see a poster of GTA: Vice City during the love game with Denise (CJ's first friend). In addition, the two characters ( Jethro and Dwaine ), from whom Tommy Vercetti bought the boatyard, reappear as mechanics in Carl's workshop in San Fierro.

GTA: San Andreas Special Edition (2005)

With the Special Edition of GTA: San Andreas , a collector's box for the PlayStation 2 was released on October 18, 2005, containing the game San Andreas as well as the films The Introduction and Sunday Driver on DVD .

The Introduction was previously only available as part of the double CD (not the eight-CD box set) of the soundtrack for the game and tells the story of the story behind the plot of GTA: San Andreas . Sunday Driver is a documentary about The Majestics lowrider club in Compton, California, and will also be released as a UMD video for Sony's PSP . The game itself is no different from the version already available.

Mobile versions

Dubbing voices

The main character CJ is voiced by rapper Chris "Young Maylay" Bellard. While this is largely unknown, some of the people who appear in the course of the game are synchronized by known people. For example, CJ's alleged pal Big Smoke is voiced by Menace II Society actor Clifton Powell , cop Frank Tenpenny by Samuel L. Jackson , his partner by the late Chris Penn , B Dup (drug dealer and former friend of the Grove Street Families) by The Game , Madd Dogg from Ice-T , The Truth from Peter Fonda , Ryder from MC Eiht , Mike Toreno from James Woods and Maccer from Happy Mondays singer Shaun Ryder . Cesar Vialpando is voiced by Clifton Collins Jr., who plays gang member Cesar Sanchez in the movie 187 - A Deadly Number (starring Samuel L. Jackson) .

Stars can also be found among the voices of the radio hosts. So z. B. K-DST host Tommy "The Nightmare" Smith spoken by Guns-N'-Roses frontman Axl Rose and Julio G, a well-known DJ on the West Coast hip-hop scene, speaks himself as the host of "Radio Los Santos ".
