Gorga is a municipality in the metropolitan city of Rome in the Italian region of Lazio with 702 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is 71 km southeast of Rome and 42 km west of Frosinone .

geography

Gorga is located in the Monti Lepini , a mountain range between the Pontine plain and the Saccotal . It is a member of the Comunità Montana Monti Lepini . Gorga borders on Anagni ( FR ), Carpineto Romano , Montelanico , Morolo (FR), Sgurgola (FR) and Supino (FR).

history

In Roman antiquity, Gorga was a pagus , an insignificant village. It did not experience an upswing until the time of the Great Migration , when people fled the plains to the easily defended place. It was first mentioned in writing in 1088 when Pope Urban II subordinated the castle of Gorga Anagni. In 1216 the Villamagna Monastery was founded in the municipality, which was destroyed in 1398 by the residents of Gorga. In the 17th century the village came under the rule of the Pamphilj .
