Henry Schoellkopf Reuss (born February 22, 1912 in Milwaukee , Wisconsin , †  January 12, 2002 in San Rafael , California ) was an American politician . Between 1955 and 1983 he represented the state of Wisconsin in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Henry Reuss attended Cornell University in Ithaca ( New York ) until 1933 . After completing a law degree at Harvard University and being admitted to the bar in 1936, he began to work in his new profession. Between 1939 and 1940 he worked as a county government advisor in Milwaukee County . From 1941 to 1942 Reuss worked for the Office of Price Administration . During the Second World War he was an officer in an infantry unit in the US Army . By the end of the war he had attained the rank of major. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his military achievements . In 1945 Reuss worked in the military administration in occupied Germany . He was responsible for price control. In 1949 he was a consultant in Paris on the implementation of the Marshall Plan .

Until 1950 Reuss belonged to the Republican Party . He left this in protest against US Senator Joseph McCarthy and became a member of the Democrats . In the same year he became a special attorney in Milwaukee County. From 1953 to 1954 Reuss was a member of the Milwaukee School Board. Between 1948 and 1952 he also served on a commission that advised the National Resources Board . In 1948 and 1960 he ran unsuccessfully for the office of Mayor of Milwaukee.

In the 1954 congressional election , Reuss was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fifth constituency of Wisconsin , where he succeeded Charles J. Kersten on January 3, 1955 . After 13 re-elections, he was able to complete a total of 14 consecutive terms in Congress by January 3, 1983 . The civil rights movement , the Cuban Missile Crisis , the Vietnam War and the Watergate Affair took place during this period . Reuss was an opponent of the Vietnam War. In 1968 he supported US Senator Eugene McCarthy in his unsuccessful attempt to be nominated for the Democratic presidential nomination. Reuss was at times chairman of several committees during his long time in Congress. From 1975 to 1981 he headed the Banking and Finance Committee . Between 1981 and 1983 he chaired the Joint Economic Committee .

In 1982 Reuss renounced another candidacy for Congress. He died on January 12, 2002, a few weeks before his 90th birthday. Henry Reuss was married to Margaret Magrath since 1942. The couple had four children.

In 1969 Reuss was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
