John Hine (racing driver)
John Edwin Louin Hine (born April 7, 1933 in Wandworth ; † January 17, 2020 ) was a British racing car driver .
Racing career
John Hine had a long career in international sports car racing . After starting out in British club sport, he competed for the first time in the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1962 . As a works driver at Marcos , he drove a Marcos GT Gullwing together with Richard Prior , which failed after 85 laps due to an engine failure. The connection to Marcos came about through his entrepreneurial activity. 1957 opened a car workshop with his wife Francis Anne (* 1941) in Atherton , where he sold used sports cars as well as Marcos vehicles . The company's proceeds were used to finance his racing activities, which were often handled by his own small racing team under the name Red Rose Racing . After financial difficulties, Hine dissolved the company in the 1990s.
John Hine was a very busy driver in the 1960s. He drove in British GT and sports car series and repeatedly competed in the sports car world championship . In the early 1970s he achieved international success. In a Chevron B19 he won the Dunes Trophy Zandvoort in 1971 and was third overall in the 1000 km race of Spa-Francorchamps in 1972 . He achieved another third place in a world championship run at the 800 km race in Dijon in 1975 .
His best result in the 1000 km race at the Nürburgring , for which he competed eight times, was in 1972 together with John Bridges in fifth place in the overall classification and winning the sports car class up to 2 liters. The duo started with the Chevron B21 from Red Rose Racing in 7th place.
In the last few years of his life he suffered from vascular dementia . He died in January 2020 after a brief serious illness.
