Categoria Superiore 1998/99

The Category Superiore 1999/2000 (meaning: the highest league ) was the 61st edition of the Albanian football championship and was organized by the national football association Federata Shqiptare e Futbollit . The league was reduced by two clubs to 14 compared to the previous season . The season began on September 18, 1999 and ended on May 24, 2000.

Season course

After the winter break, Teuta Durrës was leading with 25 points ahead of SK Tirana (24 points) and Tomori Berat (21 points). Teuta only gave up the lead on matchday 18, after three consecutive games without a win. At the end of the season it was only enough for third place.

SK Tirana and Tomori Berat finished the league with 52 points each. The master had to be determined in a playoff. Tirana won only after a penalty shoot-out and was thus able to defend the title.

The participant in the Intertoto Cup also had to be decided in a play-off game. Vllaznia Shkodra prevailed against Bylis Ballsh with the same number of points 4: 3.

KF Elbasani could not avoid the relegation despite four points from the last two games. They lost to Besa Kavaje and like the bottom of the table FK Partizani Tirana had to go into the second division . For Partizani , this was the first relegation since the club was founded in 1946.
