List of paintings by Édouard Manet
The list of paintings by Édouard Manet includes the well-known body of work in oil carried pictures of the French painter Édouard Manet . Not included in this list are the pastels by Édouard Manet , for which there is a separate list. This separation is based on the division of the most recently published catalog raisonné by the authors Rouart / Wildenstein from 1975.
The exact number of paintings by Édouard Manet is not known. He himself destroyed a number of paintings, especially in the 1860s, so that his early work is certainly incomplete today. In addition, it is known for some pictures that he cut them up and then worked on individual fragments. These plants are marked accordingly in the following list. Another problem are works in which Manet's authorship is disputed. Manet's widow Suzanne Manet initially contributed to this. She occasionally had copies of Manet's works made in order to keep her husband's mementos when selling originals. Later on, some of these copies came onto the art market as supposed originals. In addition, after Manet's death in 1883, there were occasional dubious attributions when the value of his paintings began to rise rapidly. Today, some of these pictures are in museums, where they are referred to as Manet's independent works. The problematic works are marked accordingly in the list of doubtful attributions.
The dating of Manet's paintings poses a further problem with the list-based recording of his paintings. Although there is a year of creation noted by Manet on the picture for some paintings or there are records in letters or in his sales book, a large number of his paintings are missing such notices. Manet’s biographers have tried in part to obtain more information from interviewing Manet’s family and friends, but these memories have sometimes been inaccurate or contradicting each other. Art historians have also made stylistic comparisons in order to narrow down the time when the pictures were created. An exact determination to an exact year was not always possible, so that there are often differences here.
List of Manet's works
Most of the information in the list is taken from the catalog raisonné by Denis Rouart and Daniel Wildenstein from 1975. Accordingly, the titles are given in French. The additional specification of German titles was deliberately omitted, as these are often available in several variants. The number in the catalog raisonné of Rouart / Wildenstein Volume I (RW) is given under WV 1975 . The collection column shows the current owner as far as is known, in some cases different from the catalog raisonné. Pictures that were only recognized as authentic works after the publication of the catalog raisonné in 1975 are also noted in this list. Pictures whose authenticity is in doubt are shown separately in a list below.
