Since the Baden-Württemberg district reform was completed in 1973, the district of Schwäbisch Hall has comprised 30 municipalities, including 9 cities (Crailsheim, Gaildorf, Gerabronn, Ilshofen, Kirchberg an der Jagst, Langenburg, Schrozberg, Schwäbisch Hall and Vellberg) and 21 other municipalities (Blaufelden , Braunsbach, Bühlertann, Bühlerzell, Fichtenau, Fichtenberg, Frankenhardt, Kreßberg, Mainhardt, Michelbach an der Bilz, Michelfeld, Oberrot, Obersontheim, Rosengarten, Rot am See, Satteldorf, Stimpfach, Sulzbach-Laufen, Untermünkheim, Wallhausen, Wolpertshausen).
Schwäbisch Hall is the district town and at the same time the major district town , as is Crailsheim . Between individual municipalities, there are nine agreed administrative associations , namely the local government associations Braunsbach-Untermünkheim , Brettach-Jagst , Fichtenau , Ilshofen-Vellberg , Limpurger country and Upper Bühlertal and managing communities Crailsheim , Gerabronn and Schwäbisch Hall .
Measured by the number of inhabitants, Schwäbisch Hall is the largest municipality and Langenburg the smallest. In terms of the municipal area, Crailsheim is the largest municipality and Michelbach an der Bilz the smallest. The municipality with the highest population density is Schwäbisch Hall with 388 inhabitants per km², the one with the lowest is Bühlerzell with 41 inhabitants per km².
