Rum Orthodox Church of Antioch

Self-Ruling Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America

Orthodox immigrants of the Arabic language to North America from the end of the 19th century were initially looked after by the Russian Orthodox Church . From 1895 Raphael Hawaweeny, a priest from Damascus, who was ordained Bishop of Brooklyn in 1904 and served as Vicar-Bishop of the Russian Orthodox Archdiocese of North America for the Syro-Arab Christians († February 27, 1915), worked among them. In the years after 1936 there were two competing dioceses of Antiochene tradition: the Archdiocese of New York and the Archdiocese of Toledo, Ohio. It was not until 1975 that they reached an agreement. Since 2003 the archbishopric has had "administrative autonomy" within the Roman Orthodox patriarchate. At the same time, the previous auxiliary bishops were elevated to diocesan bishops.
