The market town of Pöllau with 5930 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) is located in the judicial district of Fürstenfeld and in the political district of Hartberg-Fürstenfeld in Styria ( Austria ). It is the main town of the Pöllauer Tal nature park .

As part of the Styrian community structural reform , the community has been merged with the communities Rabenwald , Saifen-Boden , Schönegg bei Pöllau and Sonnhofen since 2015 , and continues to use the name Marktgemeinde Pöllau . The basis for this is the Styrian Municipal Structural Reform Act - StGsrG.

Geographical location

Pöllau is located in Joglland around eleven kilometers west of the district capital Hartberg and around 55 km northeast of the provincial capital Graz . The Pöllauer Safen , named after her, flows through the municipality and includes the Saifen drought and the Prätisbach in the municipality. Pöllau is the center of the Pöllauer valley, a nature park on both sides of the upper reaches of the Pöllauer Safen.

• Prätis (552 Ew., 1,240.32 ha) with Baumgart, Klauber, Krughöf, Oberprätis, settlement Prätis, Stadt, Straßhöf and Unterprätis
• Rabenwald (593 Ew., 1,688.79 ha) with Halt, Haregg, Höll, In der Eben, In der Haide, Lehenshofen, Mauerhöf and Oberer Rabenwald
• Schönau (393 inhabitants, 574.09 ha)
• Winkl-Boden (220 Ew.), KG Winkl (981.50 ha) with Sonnleiten

history

Pöllau is first mentioned in a document in 1163. The place name means "field, wide valley basin". Due to its favorable location at the crossroads of two trade routes, Pöllau developed into a craft and trading center. In the 13th century, the village was expanded as planned, creating the main square with its regularity. To the north, the main square was not built, but connected to the castle and the later canon monastery.

Hans von Neuberg , the then owner of the castle and the market Pöllau, decreed in 1482 in his will, the castle after his death in an Augustinian - Chorherrenstift reallocate. In 1504 his brother-in-law Christoph von St. Georgen-Pösing finally founded the Pöllau Abbey. In the same year eight canons under provost Ulrich moved from Vorau to Pöllau.

In 1677, the renovation and new construction of the monastery began under Provost Michael Josef Maister - initially with the construction of a granary and the Meierhaus . In 1681 the Marian column was built on the main square. After Master's death, Propst Ortenhofen continued the renovation, which was completed in 1779 with the erection of the high altar in the new church. However, the Pöllau Abbey was abolished six years later and handed over to the state.

The market town of Pöllau had meanwhile developed into a stately market in which handicrafts and trade became essential pillars of the economy.

• The former Pöllau Abbey is also known as Pöllau Castle . It goes back to a moated castle from the 12th century. The fresco hall offers the perfect setting for festive occasions. On Carnival Monday , the traditional Castle Ball takes place.
• The collegiate and parish church of St. Veit there is not only the largest baroque church building in Styria, but also the key building for the Eastern Styrian late baroque . It was built by Joachim Carlone from 1701 to 1709 and decorated with frescoes by Mathias von Görz. The church is dedicated to St. Vitus . Since the floor plan of the church is based on St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and its dome is reminiscent of St. Peter's Basilica, the church is known as the "Styrian St. Peter's Basilica". It has been a subsidiary church of the Lateran Basilica since 1990 .

Museums

• The Pöllau-based Victor-Franz-Hess Society runs the Echophysics Museum in Pöllau Castle , with the exhibition "Radiation - the exposed person". Victor Franz Hess was the only Styrian Nobel Prize winner and received the Nobel Prize for his services to research into cosmic rays. Peter Maria Schuster , the President of the Victor-Franz-Hess Society, was the initiator of the exhibition; exhibits from the estate of Victor-Franz Hess are presented.
• "Puppet and Toy Private Museum Peitl" (PPP): On display are dolls, teddies and toys as well as a children's book library with exhibits from all over the world from the years 1750/1780 to the present day.
• Gallery with local, regional and international special exhibitions
• Culture house
• The "Ferrari Museum Pöllau" shows Ferraris from the creative time of Enzo Ferrari . Cars from Lamborghini and Maserati can also be seen.

The Pöllau music band represented Styria at the Austrian brass music competition in Feldkirchen in Carinthia in 2002 and became the Austrian national winner that year.

The “Pöllau Flower and Garden Days” take place every year in June in the Schlosspark Pöllau and Karl-Brunner-Park. Another facility is the Aupark around the Auteich.

The Pöllauer Tal nature park comprises the Pöllau market municipality and the Pöllauberg municipality .

Pöllau is located away from the main roads on the state road through the Pöllauer Tal. The south autobahn A2 from Vienna to Graz is approx. 17 km away and can be reached via the Hartberg junction (115). The distance to Wechsel Straße B 54 from Hartberg to Gleisdorf is about eleven kilometers.

Pöllau is not connected to the railway network. At the beginning of the 20th century there were plans to open up Pöllau with a branch line of the Feistritztalbahn . However, this was prevented by the two world wars. For this reason, there is no train station within ten kilometers of Pöllau.

The Graz Airport is about 60 km away.

During the constituent meeting of the municipal council on May 28, 2015, Johann Schirnhofer (ÖVP) was elected and sworn in as mayor of the newly composed municipality of Pöllau. Schirnhofer received 23 of 24 votes (a local council was excused). Schirnhofer, who replaced Rupert Flicker (SPÖ) in 2005, was Mayor of Pöllau until December 31, 2014. Due to the amalgamation of the municipalities, he lost his mandate, but was entrusted as government commissioner with the management of business until the constituent meeting of the municipal council.

The community board also includes the first vice mayor Josef Pfeifer (ÖVP), the second vice mayor Günter Golec (SPÖ), finance officer Jürgen Kröpfl (ÖVP) and board member Ferdinand Haas (citizens' list).

Municipal council

The municipal council was expanded from 15 to 25 members through the incorporation. According to the result of the 2015 municipal council election, this is composed as follows:

• 14 mandates ÖVP
• 6 mandates SPÖ
• 4 mandates Independent Citizens List Pöllau
• 1 mandate FPÖ

The Greens and the KPÖ did not make it into the municipal council.

Due to an objection by the FPÖ under list leader Johann Berger because of the alleged illegality of the electoral process of the municipal council election - this was not allowed by the state electoral authority on May 13, 2015 - the constituent meeting of the municipal council had to be postponed to May 28, 2015.

Regional policy

Pöllau is, together with Pöllauberg, a member of the Pöllauer Tal Nature Park Tourist Association and with this in the LEADER region of Eastern Styrian Heartland . On December 7, 2010, the Pöllauer Tal Nature Park was also constituted as a small region . On the occasion of the municipal structural reform in Styria (2010-2015), Pöllau was merged with four other municipalities in the small region (Rabenwald, Saifen-Boden, Schönegg near Pöllau and Sonnhofen), only Pöllauberg remained independent.

All previous municipalities had a municipal coat of arms. Due to the amalgamation of municipalities, these lost their official validity on January 1st, 2015.

Pöllau has had a new coat of arms since March 1, 2010, the new award took place without change with effect from February 10, 2015.
