Career

Junior career and early years: 2001 to 2003

Kuznetsova, who began playing tennis at the age of seven, achieved her highest ranking in 2002 with third place in the junior tennis world rankings. The year before, she won the renowned Banana Bowl and triumphed together with Galina Fokina in the junior doubles competition at the 2001 US Open . In addition, she made her debut as a qualifier in Madrid on the WTA tour, where she immediately reached the second round after beating Virginia Ruano Pascual , in which she was defeated by Lisa Raymond .

At the Australian Open 2002 she succeeded for the first time qualifying for the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament. There she beat Cho Yoon-jeong at the beginning , before failing in the second round to Iroda Toʻlaganova . In the same year she won the final against Denisa Chládková in Eespo and in Bali , where she defeated Conchita Martínez in three sets in the final , her first two individual titles on the WTA tour and ended the season in the top 50 for the first time World ranking. At the side of Arantxa Sánchez Vicario , she also won the doubles competition in Eespo and secured two further titles with her in Sopot and Tokyo . She achieved her best Grand Slam result to date in New York , where she advanced from qualification for the first time to the third round, in which she lost to Silvia Farina Elia .

In Wimbledon , Kuznetsova reached the quarterfinals for the first time the following year after a success over Maria Sharapova , but she was eliminated there, as well as in the semifinals in San Diego , against Justine Henin-Hardenne . However, Kuznetsova initially managed to climb to the top of the world in doubles. Together with Martina Navrátilová , she won five WTA titles in 2003 with Gold Coast , Dubai and Leipzig as well as the two Tier I tournaments in Rome and Toronto and qualified for the first time for the 2003 WTA Championships in Los Angeles; in the semifinals the two lost there as well as in the final of the US Open Virginia Ruano Pascual and Paola Suárez . She finished the year in seventh place in the double world rankings.

International breakthrough: 2004

At the start of the 2004 season, she progressed to the final in Dubai and Doha , but lost both times to Justine Henin-Hardenne and Anastassija Myskina . Also in the final in Warsaw she had to admit defeat to Venus Williams before she could win her third WTA individual title against Daniela Hantuchová in Eastbourne . At the Olympic Games in Athens she reached the quarter-finals in the singles competition , in which she was defeated by Amélie Mauresmo , in doubles she failed as top seed at the side of Jelena Lichowzewa , with whom she previously triumphed twice on the WTA tour in Gold Coast and Doha reached the final at the Australian Open , French Open and US Open , already in the second round to Nathalie Dechy and Sandrine Testud . Kuznetsova celebrated her final breakthrough in singles in 2004 at the US Open , when she defeated her compatriot Jelena Dementjewa 6: 3, 7: 5 in the second all-Russian final of a Grand Slam tournament . In 2004, after Anastassia Myskina at the French Open and Marija Sharapova at Wimbledon, she was the third Russian woman in a row to win a Grand Slam tournament. Then she won with a final victory against Marlene Weingärtner for the second time after 2002 in Bali and reached the final in Beijing , in which she was defeated by Serena Williams in three sets. At the end of the year she competed at the WTA Championships both in doubles and for the first time in singles, but retired from the group stage after defeating Wera Swonarjowa and losing twice to Marija Sharapova and Amélie Mauresmo. Nevertheless, she was able to finish the season in fifth place in the world rankings. In doubles in the same year she even achieved her best position in the ranking in third place. At the WTA Championships she was eliminated from Jelena Lichowzewa's side again in the semi-finals, this time against Nadja Petrowa and Meghann Shaughnessy . On December 19, 2004, she was tested positive for ephedrine during a doping control during an invitation tournament in Charleroi in the A sample , which initially caused a sensation, but was not classified as an offense according to the rules of the WTA . According to Kuznetsova, he had taken a cough suppressant in order to be able to compete in the tournament despite having a cold.

Made it to the top of the world: 2005 to 2009

After a weaker year in singles in 2005, in which she only made it to the quarter-finals twice in Melbourne and Wimbledon and was eliminated as defending champion in the first round against Yekaterina Bychkowa at the US Open , she dropped out of the top 10 in the world rankings at the end of the season . It went better in doubles, where she and Alicia Molik celebrated her first Grand Slam success at the Australian Open and then triumphed in Miami . At the side of Amélie Mauresmo, she was also in the final for the first time in London , but there the two were clearly beaten by Cara Black and Liezel Huber .

In 2006, Kuznetsova came in her first twelve tournaments of the year in singles at least in the round of 16 and was able to book her first title in a Tier I tournament in Miami , after she had defeated Maria Sharapova in the final. In the final of the French Open , she missed her second Grand Slam title and lost to Justine Henin-Hardenne. In addition, after a final victory over Marion Bartoli , she won for the third time in Bali and the following week also won for the first time in Beijing , where she didn't give Mauresmo a chance in the final. In addition, she reached the semifinals in seven tournaments, including in Rome ; there she lost just under three sets against Dinara Safina . For the second time after 2006 she qualified for the individual competition of the WTA Championships in Madrid, but after a victory over Jelena Dementjewa and two defeats against Kim Clijsters and Marija Sharapova, she was eliminated again in the group stage. Nevertheless, she finished the season in the world rankings with fourth place in her best position to date. From then on, doubles played a subordinate role in her career. In 2006 she was able to triumph again at the side of Mauresmo in Eastbourne .

In 2007, Kuznetsova was in a total of six WTA finals, of which she could only win one in New Haven , in which she benefited from the injury-related abandonment of her final opponent Ágnes Szávay after a set deficit . In the final of the US Open she then failed to Justine Henin, before she lost in the final in Rome against Jelena Janković , in Qatar Telecom German Open 2007 she had to admit defeat in the final of Ana Ivanović and in the final of Indian Wells she was defeated by Daniela Hantuchová. Nevertheless, in September she reached her best world ranking position so far with second place. At the WTA Championships 2007 in Madrid, she had to accept three defeats in the group stage against Ivanović, Sharapova and Hantuchová. In 2008 Kuznetsova continued their weak final record and could not win a title in five finals. She lost to Justine Henin in the final in Sydney at the start of the season . In the final of Dubai Jelena Dementjewa proved too strong and in the final of Indian Wells she suffered her second final defeat against Ana Ivanović. At the end of the season, she lost two more finals against Dinara Safina and Jelena Janković in Tokyo and Beijing . As world number eight, Kusnezowa managed to qualify for the WTA Championships in Doha in 2008 , where, however, as in the previous year, she finished the group stage last with three preliminary round defeats against Wera Swonarjowa, Jelena Janković and Agnieszka Radwańska . She achieved her best Grand Slam result at the French Open when she made it to the semi-finals, in which she again lost to Dinara Safina. At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, she was eliminated in singles in the first round against Li Na , in doubles she competed with Dinara Safina. The top two seeded lost to Yan Zi and Zheng Jie in the quarter-finals .

After a changeable start to 2009, Kuznetsova reached the semi-finals in Miami , where she was defeated by the eventual winner Viktoria Azaranka . In doubles, she won her 14th title there alongside Amélie Mauresmo. Then she played an outstanding clay court season in which she faced her compatriot Dinara Safina in three finals. While Kuznetsova won the match in the final in Stuttgart , Safina won the final in Rome before Kuznetsova was able to achieve her second Grand Slam title at the French Open . At the end of the season she also won in Beijing , where she was able to prevail in the final against Agnieszka Radwańska, her first victory in a tournament in the Premier Mandatory category. At the WTA Championships 2009 , the end followed after two defeats against Serena and Venus Williams and a win over Jelena Dementjewa again in the group stage. Nevertheless, she overwintered the season as third in the world rankings.

Years of inconstancy: 2010 to 2015

In the following years, Kuznetsova could no longer match the constant top performances of the seasons 2004 to 2009, although she repeatedly demonstrated her class in places. In 2010 she won in San Diego after their second playoff win in a row against Agnieszka Radwańska her 13th single title on the WTA Tour and achieved following the semi-finals of the Roger Cup in Montreal, in which they, as well as in the final of Dubai 2011 by Caroline Wozniacki stopped. After reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, which she lost 4: 6, 6: 1, 14:16 in the longest match in Grand Slam history, Francesca Schiavone despite defending six match points after 4 hours and 44 minutes, hers remained Achievements mixed. In Paris , she reached the quarter-finals again in the same year, but was eliminated there against Marion Bartoli. At the Australian Open 2012 she won her second Grand Slam title in doubles at the start of the new season on the side of Wera Swonaryova. In the final, the two prevailed against Roberta Vinci and Sara Errani . An injury, because of which she had to suspend the second half of the 2012 season, ended her series of 40 Grand Slam appearances in a row. In addition, Kuznetsova left the top 50 in the world rankings for the first time in ten years. The following year, however, she was able to return to the top 30 of the ranking due to two quarter-finals at the Australian Open and the French Open , where she had to admit defeat to Wiktoryja Asaranka and Serena Williams. At the end of the season, she won her last double title on the WTA tour together with Samantha Stosur at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow .

In 2014, Kuznetsova achieved her seventh quarter-finals at the French Open in Paris , where she lost to Simona Halep . In Washington she then won her 14th WTA individual title at a smaller tournament and advanced to the quarter-finals in Beijing , where she lost to the eventual winner Maria Sharapova. The following year she was in the final of the Premier Mandatory tournament in Madrid for the first time , in which she lost to Petra Kvitová without a chance. After months of changeable results, she convinced at the end of the season after winning the final over Anastassija Pavlyuchenkova by winning the Moscow Kremlin Cup for the first time . With the win she qualified for the WTA Eite Trophy in Zhuhai in 2015 , but after a win against Caroline Wozniacki and a defeat against Roberta Vinci, she was eliminated in the preliminary round.

Return to the top 10: 2016

In 2016, Kuznetsova, who celebrated her 16th WTA individual title against Mónica Puig at the start of the season in Sydney , returned to the top of the world. After another finals in Miami , where she lost to Wiktoryja Asaranka, she reached the quarter-finals in Rome and the fourth round at the French Open and Wimbledon . In doubles, she reached the semi-finals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time since 2012, alongside Margarita Gasparjan . There they were only defeated by the later winners Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic . With the move into the semi-finals in Wuhan and the successful defense of the title in Moscow in the final against Daria Gavrilova , Kuznetsova returned to the top 10 in the world rankings after six years and qualified for the WTA Championships in Singapore for the first time since 2009 , where she after two Victories against Agnieszka Radwańska and Karolína Plíšková as well as a defeat against Garbiñe Muguruza advanced to the semi-finals for the first time, in which they failed to Dominika Cibulková. She ended the season ninth in the world rankings. At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro she came in singles after successes over Wang Qiang and Monica Niculescu in the round of 16, in which she was beaten by Johanna Konta . She competed in doubles with Darja Kassatkina ; the two were eliminated after losing in the quarterfinals to Andrea Hlaváčková and Lucie Hradecká .

Since 2017

In 2017, Kuznetsova achieved her best Grand Slam result in London when she reached the quarter-finals, which she lost to Garbiñe Muguruza. In addition, she reached the final in Indian Wells for the first time since 2008, in which she was defeated by her compatriot Jelena Wesnina , and was in the semi-finals in Madrid , where she had to admit defeat to Kristina Mladenovic. A hand injury that she sustained at the end of the year subsequently put her out of action until March 2018. On her comeback in Indian Wells , as in the other three Grand Slam tournaments of the season, she lost in the first round and thus fell out of the top 100 in the world rankings for the first time since 2002. Nevertheless, after beating Donna Vekić in the final in Washington , she was able to triumph for the second time since 2014 and win her last WTA title to date.

As a result of another injury break in early 2019, from which she only returned at the beginning of the clay court season in Lugano , Kuznetsova found it difficult to find the rhythm of the match. In Cincinnati , however, she came as a complete surprise to the final after a straight two-set win against world number one Ashleigh Barty , which she lost to Madison Keys . In Wuhan she finally reached the third round after qualifying and ended the year in world number 53. Before the corona-related end of the 2020 season, she was in the semi-finals in Doha , in which she was defeated by the eventual winner Aryna Sabalenka .

Fed Cup

In 2004 Kuzentsowa made his debut in the 4-1 preliminary round success over Australia for the Russian Fed Cup team . Since then, she has contested 40 singles and doubles for her country, of which she was able to win 27 (individual balance 21:11). In Russia's 3-2 defeat in the 2011 Fed Cup final against the Czech Republic , she competed in both individual games, defeating Lucie Šafářová before losing to Petra Kvitová the next day. 2016 she lost when Viertelfinalaus against the Netherlands Richèl Hogenkamp with 6: 7, 7: 5 and 10:. 8 With a playing time of exactly four hours, it was the longest single match in Fed Cup history.
