The Westfalentarif (WT) is a tariff association for public transport in North Rhine-Westphalia . It covers the area of the Zweckverband Nahverkehr Westfalen-Lippe (NWL) and borders on the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR), the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Sieg (VRS), the states of Lower Saxony , Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate as well as the Netherlands and the local transport associations. After the Berlin-Brandenburg transport association , it is the second largest tariff area in Germany in terms of area.

The association forms one of the four tariff areas in North Rhine-Westphalia. In addition to the tariff associations, there is a state tariff ( NRW tariff ) that is only used for trips between these tariff zones.

history

The association meeting of the NWL created the first requirements for a Westphalian tariff in October 2011. A project office was then set up at OWL Verkehr GmbH in Bielefeld. In August 2013, some tariff harmonization was already carried out and a student leisure card (“FunTicket”) and a job ticket for the whole of Westphalia-Lippe were introduced. The first mentioned starting times 2015 and 2016 could not be kept. In 2017 a group company (Westfalentarif GmbH) was founded with headquarters in Bielefeld. The network started after around five years of planning on August 1, 2017.

The Westfalentarif replaced the tariffs of the Verkehrsgemeinschaft Ruhr-Lippe (Ruhr-Lippe-Tarif) , the Verkehrsgemeinschaft Münsterland (Münsterland-Tarif) , the Verkehrsgemeinschaft Westfalen-Süd , the local transport association Paderborn-Höxter (Hochstift-Tarif) and the OWL Verkehr GmbH (the Six) . It also replaced the NRW tariff between these areas.

Tariff model

The Westfalentarif (WT) with approx. 300 tariff areas (corresponding to municipal boundaries ) is structured regionally and comprises the regions of Ostwestfalen-Lippe (divided into the previous “ Der Sechser ” with the new name “TeutoOWL” T and Paderborn / Höxter H), Münsterland (M ), Ruhr / Lippe (identification also M) and Südwestfalen (S). General price levels are 1 to 11, with 11 having a network effect for Westphalia. In the five still existing network regions there are partly different tariff offers for the price levels up to a maximum of 10. Each of these has the additional designation T, H, M or S (example: 6T). There are also city price levels (0) and short-haul tickets (K).

The price levels 7T, 6H, 5S and 9M (Münsterland) or 10M (Ruhr / Lippe) have network effects for day / timed tickets in the respective tariff regions. Season tickets can be expanded up to network price level 11 with greatly reduced connection tickets, with the exception of day tickets. The 9 o'clock day ticket, with the maximum price level 11, is based on the “SchönerTagTicket” of the NRW tariff (approx. € 30 in the single version). All-day tickets are more expensive than two single tickets. As in all NRW associations, dogs can be taken along free of charge; a “FahrradTagesTicket” is required for bicycles (exception: a bicycle is included with day tickets).

The Westphalian tariff applies to all buses, light rail vehicles and local trains in the transport sector , although surcharges or separate tickets are required for night buses in some cities. In addition, HandyTickets sold by moBiel are only valid for the city area on city buses and trams, not on regional trains. The Bahncard  of Deutsche Bahn  is not recognized, but travelers with a valid BahnCard 100 can also use local and long-distance trains free of charge in the Westphalian tariff area. The cross-through-country ticket, which is valid throughout Germany in local transport, is valid on all local trains.
