Vyacheslav Petrovich Vedenin ( Russian Вячеслав Петрович Веденин ; born October 1, 1941 in Sloboda, Tula Oblast ) is a former Russian cross-country skier who started for the Soviet Union in the late 1960s and early 1970s .

Career

Wedenin appeared internationally for the first time at the World Championships in Oslo in 1966 . There he was eighth over 15 km, sixth over 50 km and fifth with the relay. The following year he won third place with the relay at the Svenska Skidspelen . At the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble , he won the silver medal over 50 km. He also finished 14th over 30 km and fourth in the relay. In March 1969 he won the Lahti Ski Games over 50 km and also took second place in the 15 km run. Vedenin celebrated further successes at the 1970 World Championships in Štrbské Pleso , when he won two gold and one silver medal. In 1971 he came second at the Svenska Skidspelen with the relay and at the Lahti Ski Games in second place over 50 km. During the opening ceremony of the 1972 Winter Games in Sapporo , Vedenin was the Soviet standard-bearer. He won the gold medal there both over 30 kilometers and with the Soviet relay. He also finished third in the 50-kilometer run. In the relay race, he was the last runner in the race with over a minute behind, until then nobody had made up so much time. His victory over 30 kilometers was the first Soviet in a single race. At the Svenska Skidspelen in Lycksele in 1972 , he won the relay and also took third place in the 30 km run. The following year he was third with the relay at the Svenska Skidspelen. At the Soviet championships, Vedenin won six times with the relay (1966, 1968-1970, 1972, 1973), four times over 50 km (1967-1969, 1972), twice over 70 km (1969, 1970) and once over 15 km (1969 ). In 1970 he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and in 1972 the Order of Lenin .
