Bundesliga 1977/78

The 2nd Bundesliga 1977/78 was played in two seasons of 20 clubs each. The two relay champions Arminia Bielefeld (North relay) and SV Darmstadt 98 (South relay) were promoted directly to the 1st Bundesliga. As the third promoted 1. FC Nürnberg prevailed in the relegation against Rot-Weiss Essen and followed as the third promoted to the upper house.

TSV 1860 Munich , 1. FC Saarbrücken (in the south season) and FC St. Pauli (in the north season) got out of the 1. Bundesliga and played in the second division the following season.

North

Arminia Bielefeld secured the championship title of the 2nd Bundesliga North in the 1977/78 season with a narrow lead of one point over Rot-Weiss Essen . Six years after the forced relegation as part of the Bundesliga scandal, this meant returning to the top division. Rot-Weiss Essen failed in the relegation to 1. FC Nürnberg , the second in the 2. Bundesliga South. So the direct return to promotion after relegation from the 1st Bundesliga was missed. The second relegated, Tennis Borussia Berlin , ended the season in tenth place in the table without any chance of promotion.

With Schwarz-Weiß Essen , a founding member of the 2nd Bundesliga was relegated to the Oberliga Nordrhein after four years . Other relegated teams were the two previous year's climbers 1. FC Bocholt and OSC Bremerhaven , as well as SC Herford .
