Brown County is a county in the state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Nashville .

The county is located in south-central Indiana and has an area of 820 square kilometers, of which eleven square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Johnson County , Bartholomew County , Jackson County , Monroe County, and Morgan County .
history
Brown County was formed on February 4, 1836 from parts of Bartholomew County, Jackson County, and Monroe County. It was named after Jacob Brown , a US general in the War of 1812.

According to the 2000 census , Brown County had 14,957 people in 5,897 households and 4,434 families. The population density was 18 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.16 percent white, 0.21 percent African American, 0.22 percent Native American, 0.20 percent Asian, 0.01 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.37 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.82 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.88 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 5,897 households, 29.9 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 64.8 percent were married couples living together, 6.5 percent were single mothers, and 24.8 percent were non-families. 20.6 percent were single households and 7.3 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 2.89 people.
23.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 6.3 percent between 18 and 24, 27.9 percent between 25 and 44 years. 29.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 100.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 98.1 men.
The median income for a household in the 43,708 USD , and the median income for a family 49,252 USD. Males had a median income of $ 36,828 versus $ 24,321 for females. The per capita income was $ 20,548. 7.7 percent of families and 8.9 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
