history
Custer County was formed in 1877 on former Indian land. It was named after General George Armstrong Custer (1839–1876).

Custer County had a population of 11,793 people as of the 2000 census . Of these, 238 people were housed in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 4,826 households and 3,320 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.63 percent white, 0.07 percent African American, 0.41 percent Native American, 0.15 percent Asian and 0.20 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.55 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 0.92 percent of the population.
Of the 4,826 households, 30.3 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 60.9 percent were married couples living together, 5.4 percent were single mothers, 31.2 percent were non-families, 28.9 percent were single households, and 15.0 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.95.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.3 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 5.5 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 23.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 23.7 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 21.1 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 96.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 91.7 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 30,677 , and the median income for a family is $ 37,063. Males had a median income of $ 24,609 versus $ 19,732 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,171. 9.1 percent of families and 12.4 percent of the population were below the poverty line. These included 16.2 percent of children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 9.1 percent of seniors aged 65 and over.
