Dakota County is part of the Sioux City Metropolitan Area , which stretches from Iowa to the neighboring states of South Dakota and Nebraska.

The county is located in the far northeast of Nebraska on the west bank of the Missouri River , which forms the border with Iowa and South Dakota. Dakota County covers an area of 693 square kilometers, of which 9 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following neighboring counties:

Dakota County was formed from part of Burt County in 1855. It was named after the Dakota people .
Five buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 10, 2018).

The racial the population was composed of 70.5 percent white, 3.1 percent African American, 2.7 percent Native American, 3.0 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 2.2 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 35.3 percent of the population.
