Retro design

The 2007 Fiat 500 is a car model from the Italian car manufacturer Fiat . It is assigned to the so-called microcar class , although it is significantly larger than its stylistic model, the Fiat Nuova 500 , which was manufactured from 1957 to 1977 . Under the name Fiat Trepiuno 2004 on was Geneva Motor Show a retro design study presented.

On July 4, 2007 - 50 years after the Nuova 500 was introduced - Fiat officially presented the car. Sales in Germany began on October 27, 2007.

In Fiat's model history, the new 500 is the direct successor to the Seicento . In contrast to its predecessors, which are considered to be inexpensive entry-level models, the 500 lifestyle product should be modeled on the Mini . Technically, the 500 shares many components such as the engines and the floor pan with the Panda . The prices of the Fiat 500 from 10,500 to 14,500 euros are around 1,500 euros above those of the Panda.

On November 19, 2007, the new Fiat 500 was voted Car of the Year 2008 .

At the end of 2013, Fiat launched the sporty-looking version 500S . 2019 was the most successful year of sales with 375,000 vehicles. At the Geneva Motor Show 2020, the next generation was also presented on a new platform as an electric 500E .

development

The Fiat Trepiùno was presented as the design basis for the production model at the 2004 Geneva Motor Show.

The Fiat Trepiùno study from 2004
The production model as well as the historical model

With an external length of 3.30 meters, the retro design without a radiator grille and with round headlights and the steeply sloping rear was reminiscent of the old Fiat 500  nuova with a folding sunroof. Other features of the study, which was technically related to the Fiat Panda, were large light-alloy wheels, a white and red interior with a central LC information display and a special seating concept: In the normal position there is a 2 + 2-seater with rear folding emergency seats. If the passenger folds the dashboard away in front of him and slides forward, a seat with sufficient legroom is created behind him, creating a 3 + 1-seater; hence the name of the concept study Trepiùno ("three plus one"). The space-saving seats made of two different hard layers of polyurethane are particularly thin and should still offer sufficient comfort.

The retro design had been used by various manufacturers with varying degrees of success since the 1990s, including cars such as the VW New Beetle , the Nissan Figaro, and the Chrysler PT Cruiser . The direct competitor of the 500 is the Mini , which has been produced since 2001 and is also a reinterpretation of a historic small car.

For communication and advertising purposes, the manufacturer secured the domains fiat500.de and fiat500.com even before the market launch. There everyone now had the opportunity to influence the look and equipment of the future series model. "This approach is unique," said brand director Luca Cordero di Montezemolo , "for the first time in the history of Fiat, perhaps even the entire automotive industry, a new car is being developed with the active participation of the public." (Alloy rims, colors, etc.) put together the individual Fiat 500. The manufacturer promised that these contributions would also have an impact on future series production.

After a relatively short development time of 18 months from design acceptance to start of series production, the new Fiat 500 (since August 2008 together with the new Ford Ka ) will be built at the Fiat plant in Tychy ( Poland ); Initially, an annual production of 120,000 copies was planned. The vehicle was initially due to appear on September 15, 2007; this date was brought forward to July 4, 2007, exactly the 50th anniversary of the presentation of the Nuova 500. Due to the high demand, there were sometimes waiting times of up to eight months when the Fiat 500 was delivered to customers. In February 2008 Fiat announced that it would increase production to 190,000 units a year. The units for the American continent have been built in the Chrysler de México plant near Toluca since 2012 .

The Fiat 500L has also been available since October 2012 , a minivan with design elements from the Fiat 500, but based on the Fiat Punto . The family was expanded in 2014 by the mini SUV Fiat 500X , which is technically based on the Jeep Renegade .

The 500 received a facelift in 2016.

technology

The Fiat 500 of the 2007/2008 model year shares a technical platform with the Fiat Panda, which is why many components of the Panda are used in the 500. In some areas, however, the technology had to be changed: Because of the short overhangs, the large wheels and the upwardly drawn-in side windows, the car got a new front section with a radiator that was moved to the rear. A special feature is the start / stop system, which, in conjunction with other measures, is intended to reduce consumption by 3 to 10 percent.

In January 2020, a mild hybrid version with a 1.0 l three-cylinder petrol engine that already complies with EURO 6d could be ordered.

Safety and driving behavior

In addition to six airbags, a knee airbag for the driver, reinforcements that absorb impact energy and improved pedestrian protection ensure the best possible safety. Compared to the Panda, the 500 received a wider track, larger stabilizers, a newly tuned chassis and a current anti-lock braking system (ABS) and electronic stability program (ESP) with brake assist (ESP not standard in all markets, e.g. in Austria) to ensure safe driving behavior with a high level of agility and comfort. The stopping distance is, according to Fiat about 38 meters when the front and rear disc brakes are installed (standard with 100-horsepower version).

The Fiat 500 achieved five stars (35 points) in the 2009 Euro NCAP crash test. This makes it the first vehicle from the A segment (small car) to achieve this top rating. The 2017 result is three stars.

Child seats can be securely attached to the two rear seats. Isofix brackets are also available there. Rear-facing child seats are permitted on the front passenger seat if the front passenger airbag is deactivated via the on-board computer.

design

Detail of the instrument cluster

In terms of design, the Fiat 500 is largely based on the Trepiùno study . The delivery program of the series model offers a wide range of different equipment features, including different exterior paintwork, fabrics, surfaces, stickers and many other extras. Up to 549,000 different combinations are possible, which allow great individualization.

Exterior

The exterior design of the production model is generally based on the old Fiat 500; However, it is a very free and modern interpretation, for example the round double headlights, the steeply sloping rear, the chrome bumpers, the all-round "belt" (bead below the window) and the narrow rear lights . The folding top of the historic models has also been available on the Fiat 500 C Cabriolet since 2009. For the sedan, the electrically-opening glass roof and a non-opening panoramic glass roof called the “Sky Dome” are available at an additional cost.

inner space

In the interior, the design, which is intended to be reminiscent of the 50-year-old predecessor, is continued in many details. Most noticeable are the dashboard painted in body color and the round central instrument. There are also some control buttons that are reminiscent of the ancestor, as well as the chrome-plated door handles. The two-tone seats of the Pop equipment are also reminiscent of those of the predecessor. The option of ordering the steering wheel and controls in an ivory color is also based on the historic Fiat 500.

As a modern small car, the new Fiat 500 has front-wheel drive and the engine at the front. This deviates from the rear-wheel drive model, but offers a trunk that is standard in its class. It holds 185 to 610 liters, depending on the position of the rear seats.

Equipment

Three different equipment lines have been available since the start of sales. The basic Pop version , the better equipped Lounge line and the Sport model . The basic equipment includes power steering , seven airbags, electric windows, central locking and CD radio as standard. In Lounge a coming air conditioning , alloy wheels and the panoramic glass roof added. The Sport equipment package contains a small rear spoiler, side sill extensions, modified front and rear bumpers with air intakes, a chrome-plated tailpipe, tinted rear windows and trim strips. The extras include a tarpaulin in the style of the original Cinquecento (500 advertised) and a perfume atomizer with different scents in the style of the Citroën C4 .

In some European markets there is also the basic model below the base, called Naked ( English , "naked").

Facelift 2016

The Fiat 500 received a facelift in 2016. On the exterior, the headlights, the taillights and the front bumper have been changed. Regardless of whether halogen or xenon light , the headlights are always designed with lens optics. The daytime running lights are in the high beam. The taillights are now more of a ring with a piece of sheet metal in the color of paint in the middle. In the interior, the ventilation nozzles are no longer horizontal, but vertical, to provide space for the new Uconnect multimedia unit. Two TomTom navigation devices in sizes 5 "and 7" are available.

Other models

Convertible sedan

In addition to the three-door hatchback, the 500 has also been available since 2009 as a convertible under the name 500C with a large folding sunroof that extends to the lower edge of the rear window. This folding sunroof is available in the colors ivory, red and black, but some color combinations of paint and roof color are not possible.

500 Abarth

As the top model, there are versions refined by Abarth . Since the beginning of 2008 Abarth has been placed as an exclusive, independent brand, which is why only a relatively small number of Fiat dealerships come into possession of a corresponding sales license.

The 1.4-liter 16V engine will be available in various Abarth versions, which, apart from the additional power, come with sporty equipment details - such as larger brakes, firmer chassis and a dynamic function, faster accelerator pedal reactions, a sportier engine map and a more direct steering characteristics allowed - should lure. In addition, the individual variants are distinguished from one another by their individual exterior design, for example in the form of spoilers. The Abarth 500 is intended as an Abarth entry-level model, which went on sale with 99 kW (135 hp) from July 2008. The model celebrated its premiere at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2008. The top version Abarth 500 SS with 117 kW (160 PS) was introduced in January 2009.

In the most powerful version, a 140 kW (190 PS) engine developed in cooperation with Ferrari is used, which is to form the basis for the new planned Abarth Cup racing series. This Abarth Assetto Corse was shown to the public in May 2008 on the occasion of the Mille Miglia in Brescia. Only 49 of the 500 Assetto Corse are said to have been built by Abarth in Italy by the end of 2008. From 2010 Abarth brought some special editions, some of them limited, onto the market: Abarth 695 Tributo Ferrari (2010), Abarth 695 Edizione Maserati (2012), Abarth 695 Biposto (2014-2016), Abarth 695 Rivale (2018) and Abarth 695 XSR Yamaha (2018).

500 natural gas

Fiat 500 natural gas

At the 80th Geneva Motor Show in March 2010, the concept of a natural gas-powered Fiat 500 1.4 Natural Power Turbo was presented. This had a 1.4 liter natural gas turbo engine with 85 kW (115 PS). A year later, also at the Geneva Motor Show, the concept of a natural gas-powered Fiat 500C was presented. The Fiat 500 and 500C natural gas turbo have been sold in a small series in Switzerland since summer 2011. It is a market offer from Erdgas Mobil AG, a company in the Swiss natural gas industry, and Gasverbund Mittelland AG.

The 500 and 500C are equipped with a two-cylinder TwinAir engine that generates 63 kW (85 hp) and accelerates the car to 100 km / h in 11.5 seconds. The CO 2 emissions are around 80 g / km. The vehicle is available with a manual 5-speed gearshift or the Dualogic automated manual transmission. The range with pure natural gas operation is 300 km, with the additional petrol tank 1000 km.

Fiat 500e

The 500e is a battery-powered variant of the vehicle.

500e (2020)

2012 model

After a conversion of Karabag as Karabag 500E has been available in Germany since 2009 , the Fiat 500e had its premiere at the LA Auto Show 2012. The 2012 model was only offered in the USA. It was developed primarily because of the strict environmental regulations that apply there. The 500e has a newly designed front section and revised side skirts, hubcaps and rear spoiler as well as new, aerodynamically designed 15-inch wheels. The first production batch was sold out after a short time, the car was sold out until 2014.

2020 model

In 2020, a new version of the 500e will be offered in several countries, probably from October. A battery with a capacity of 42 kWh is installed, which is placed in the vehicle floor, enables a WLTP range of 320 km and can be quickly charged via CCS . He's on a new platform. Some recycled materials were used for the interior.
