The Liverpool defended with six points ahead of Sunderland AFC last year's title and won a total of four English championship in their history. Of the two promoted Nottingham Forest and FC Stoke only the club from Nottingham could hold the class; in addition to FC Stoke, Oldham Athletic had to go into the Second Division . These two clubs should be replaced in the following season by the two second division promoted Notts County and West Ham United .
A total of 563 players were used, with Liverpool FC with 19 the fewest and Oldham Athletic and AFC Sunderland with 31 the most players in league games. 154 newcomers opposed 165 footballers who last came into play in the 1922/23 season. 15 players were able to play all 42 league games of their club.
The following list lists all players who played in a league game for Liverpool FC during the 1922/23 season. It must be noted that in English football a minimum number of games is usually required in order to receive the official championship medal. Since there was uncertainty about the specific regulation before the introduction of the Premier League, all players who presumably did not receive a championship medal due to their low contribution were marked with an asterisk (*). The number of missions and the goals scored are given in brackets.
