The Explorer Sport Trac was introduced in 2000 as a 2001 model. It was built on the extended chassis of an Explorer , but with a small loading area behind the normal four doors of the SUV. A platform extension was also available on request. The platform consisted entirely of filled plastic and usually there was a tonneau attachment made of hard plastic ex works. The pickup had a more contoured front, like the two-door Explorer later got. In the 2003 model year, the name “Explorer” disappeared from the doors. The rougher look continued inside, where there was only a floor completely covered with a rubber mat. Carpet was not available. Instead of the sliding window at the rear, which is common on pickups, the Sport Trac had an electrically operated "breezeway" window. The 4.0 l V6 engine from Ford-Cologne with 210 bhp (154 kW) was the only available engine. This first generation of the Sport Trac remained in production until 2005. The last copy of this series rolled off the assembly line in June 2005.

In spring 2006 a new Sport Trac was introduced for the 2007 model year. It was based on the new, larger Explorer of the 4th generation. Unlike its predecessor, it can optionally be equipped with a 4.6 l V8 engine with 24 valves. In contrast to its predecessor, the second generation Sport Trac has a completely new reinforced frame and independent suspension on all four wheels. In order to also increase safety, the AdvanceTrac and Roll Stability Control systems were introduced as standard equipment. The Sport Trac was available in two equipment variants (instead of four, as with the Explorer). There is no basic model and no model with medium equipment like the Explorer. There is a model with a higher level of equipment, the XLT and the top model Limited . Both equipment lines are also available for the Explorer. The Ford SYNC package, which contains communications and information technology for the occupants, was available as an option for 2008 .
A special series from SVT called Sport Trac Adrenalin was planned for 2007 but has been canceled. However, the adrenaline returned in 2008 as the sports version of the Sport Trac with a blackened grille and blackened trim.
