The Hong Kong Marathon (official name Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon ) is an annual marathon , since 1997 with changing routes . It is the largest outdoor sports event in Hong Kong . The event is organized by the Hong Kong Amateur Athletic Association and the title sponsor is the Standard Chartered Bank . The program sometimes includes a half marathon and a 10 km run.
history
The first event took place in 1997 and was a run from Hong Kong to Shenzhen . This cross-border race symbolized the return of Hong Kong to the People's Republic of China . About 1,000 runners started in Sheung Shui ( New Territories ) and entered Shenzhen via the Huanggang border crossing.
At the second edition in 1998, 6,000 runners took part on the changed route between the Tsing Ma Bridge and Chek Lap Kok Airport . With 7,000 participants, the race took place in the city center for the first time in 1999, on a route between Chater Road ( Central ) and Cheung Sha Wan ( Kowloon ). In 2000, the half marathon and the 10 km run were added and the starting point was moved to the Hong Kong Cultural Center in Tsim Sha Tsui . In 2001 the race with 10,000 runners took place and began in Nathan Road and ended in the Wan Chai district .
In the following years, the number of participants continued to grow, with 13,000 in 2002, 18,500 in 2003 and 31,330 in 2005. In 2005 the Hong Kong Marathon was accepted by the Standard Chartered Bank as an integral part of the four-part marathon series The Greatest Race on Earth , which ran until 2009 , and served as the final station.
In 2006, 40,174 runners took part for the 10th anniversary and Standard Chartered Bank offered a special prize money of 144,000 Hong Kong dollars . The number of participants has continued to grow until today with 43,956 runners in 2007, 50,000 in 2008, 55,000 in 2009, 60,000 in 2010, 65,000 in 2011 and 70,000 in 2012.
In 2012, the wheelchair marathon with a full distance and a 3 km route was introduced. The wheelchair half marathon was introduced in 2013, and a year later a 10 km route was added.
In 2014, 73,000 runners from over 60 countries took part in the marathon, with prize money of 300,000 US dollars. At the Hong Kong Marathon 2015 there was another innovation with the introduction of the “Youth Dash” . This is a 2.2 km run for people between the ages of 12 and 15, in which five hundred young people took part.
On February 17, 2019, the Kenyan Barnabas Kiptum achieved 2:09:20 hours, the first time in Hong Kong under 2:10 hours. In the women's race, the Belarusian Wolha Masuronak also set a course record with 2:26:13 hours.
