history

Concise can look back on a very long tradition of settlement. Numerous cultural layers of the Neolithic and the Bronze Age were discovered along the lake shore with the construction of the railway (until 1859) . The pile dwellings were probably inhabited between 3850 and 1050 BC. With the new construction of the railway line from 1990 to 2000, further excavations were carried out under the supervision of the cantonal monument protection. The lakeshore near Concise is one of the most important stations for pile dwellers north of the Alps. From the Iron Age, there was a settlement on the terrace near Concise. A burial mound with a diameter of around 15 m dates from this time. Traces from Roman times have also been preserved.

The first written mention of the place took place in 1179 under the name Concisa . The name comes from the Latin word concidere (meaning to fell , for example felled tree or felled forest ). Concise had belonged to the Grandson reign since the Middle Ages . North of the village, the Battle of Grandson took place on March 2, 1476 , in which the Confederates defeated Charles the Bold's troops. Today a plaque and a memorial stone commemorate the battle. After 1476 Grandson became a bailiwick under the common rule of Bern and Freiburg . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Concise belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force .

Attractions

The current Reformed Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste was probably built at the end of the 11th century. The bell tower and the semicircular apse in the Romanesque style date from this period . The other components show Gothic styles from the 15th and 16th centuries. Further alterations and restorations were carried out in the 17th and 19th centuries. The rectory was built in 1738. In the La Rive district, some houses from the 15th century have been preserved. The structure of the rest of the village also has numerous houses from the 17th to 19th centuries.

In a valley east of the village is the former monastery La Lance. The Carthusian monastery of Saint-Lieu de la Lance was founded in 1317. In 1537 it was abolished with the introduction of the Reformation . The buildings were sold and have since served as a mansion, with a round tower added. The small cloister has been preserved from the founding time. Most of the monastery buildings date from the 16th century, and the former church, which has a portal from the 14th century, is now used for secular purposes.

La Raisse
Gallo-Roman quarry

In the “La Raisse” corridor north of the village of Concise and not far from the shores of Lake Neuchâtel , in an area overgrown with trees and scrub, there is an old quarry (carrière de la Raisse). The upper part is a relic of Gallo-Roman building culture north of the Alps and is therefore a protected area monument . Somewhat unnoticed due to its location, the quarry is nevertheless one of the most important preserved examples of Gallo-Roman stone mining in Central Europe.

The light beige limestone from the chalk (Upper Urgon) here was used as a building material for ancient buildings in the region, for example in the amphitheater of Avenches (Aventicum). In museums in the area, isolated Gallo-Roman architectural elements can be seen, the origin of which is associated with this quarry. In addition, it must be said that in the steep ascent of the Swiss Jura there are other old, partly ancient quarries.

The visitor reaches the area via a gravel driveway and can obtain information from a board. The Gallo-Roman part of the quarry area shows the way natural stone was extracted in ancient times. The raw blocks to be extracted were exposed by grinding (cutting out furrows). The work was given up at a time when raw block extraction was planned. This makes the principle of extraction technology easy to see.
