Lukáš Rosol (born July 24, 1985 in Brno , ČSSR , today the Czech Republic ) is a Czech tennis player .

life and career

2002–2006: First experiences as a junior and at future tournaments

After reaching 50th place in the junior world rankings as a junior in 2002, Lukáš Rosol played exclusively future tournaments in the first years of his professional career. There he never got past the second round at first. That changed in 2005 when he reached two semi-finals and then his first final. In March 2006, he was able to win his first future title in Poland and then entered the top 500 in the world rankings . In total, he reached seven future finals in 2006, of which he was able to win three. In addition, Rosol was able to record its first match wins at Challenger tournaments. He finished the year at number 288 in the world rankings.

2007–2008: ATP debut and first Challenger title

In January 2007 Lukáš Rosol was able to qualify for the first time for an ATP World tournament in Auckland by defeating the top 100 player Simon Greul . In the first main round he was defeated by the top 10 player Mario Ančić . At the Australian Open he failed just like at Wimbledon and at the US Open in qualifying. Rosol won three more Future titles this year, and at Challenger level two quarter-finals were the best results. At the beginning of 2008, Lukáš Rosol qualified for the ATP tournament in Auckland, just like in the previous year . Again, however, he was eliminated from Sergio Roitman in the first main round. In June 2008 Rosol reached his first Challenger final in Košice , which he won against Miguel Ángel López Jaén . A month later he successfully qualified for the ATP tournament in Stuttgart , where he won his first ATP match against Martin Fischer . In the second round he was eliminated in three sets against Richard Gasquet, who was seeded on two . With these successes, Rosol entered the top 200 in the world rankings for the first time.

2009–2010: Further Challenger titles and Grand Slam debut

At the beginning of 2009, Lukáš Rosol initially won his seventh future title. Two months later he was able to prevail in Bergamo in his second Challenger final against Benedikt Dorsch after he had defeated the top seed Fabrice Santoro in the quarter-finals . After a few months without any major highlights, Rosol qualified for the ATP tournament in Vienna in October 2009 . There he was eliminated from Wayne Odesnik in the first main round . After falling briefly from the top 200 in early 2010, Lukáš Rosol was able to win his third Challenger title in May 2010 in Ostrava against Ivan Dodig . In July 2010 he retired from the ATP tournament in Hamburg as a qualifier in the first round against Denis Istomin . In early September 2010, Rosol then qualified for a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at the US Open . He lost in the first main round to the eventual knockout round Tommy Robredo .

2011: Success at the French Open and entry into the top 100

The year 2011 began for Lukáš Rosol with the successful qualification at the ATP tournament in Doha . There he lost his first round match against Ivo Karlović in straight sets. There was not a single break in the entire course of the match: Both sets were decided in the tie-break. After missing qualification for the Australian Open , Rosol reached the final of the Challenger tournament in Singapore at the end of January 2011 , which he lost to Dmitri Tursunow . In Dubai , Lukáš Rosol reached the second round of an ATP tournament for the second time in his career in February 2011 by defeating Karol Beck , but was eliminated there against Gilles Simon . In May 2011 Rosol was able to win his fourth Challenger title in Prague . He defeated, among others, the top 100 players Julien Benneteau and Alex Bogomolov junior . Two weeks later, Lukáš Rosol was able to qualify for the French Open for the first time , where he won his first Grand Slam match against Édouard Roger-Vasselin in five sets. The second round game against Jürgen Melzer , who was seeded in 8th position , also lasted five sets. Against the previous year's semi-finalists, Rosol fended off two match points and finally won the match after more than four hours of play. Rosol's winning streak finally ended in the third round, where he lost in four sets to the later quarter-finalist Juan Ignacio Chela . Due to his recent successes, he moved into the top 100 of the world rankings for the first time in his career. In Wimbledon Rosol missed the qualification, but was able to win his second Challenger title of the year by defeating Yevgeny Donskoi in Braunschweig the following week . At the ATP tournament in Hamburg, Lukáš Rosol moved up into the main field as a lucky loser and defeated Potito Starace in two sets before he was eliminated by the later finalist Nicolás Almagro . At the following tournaments in Gstaad and Kitzbühel , Rosol was then directly qualified for an ATP tournament for the first time; he was eliminated in the first round. In the further course of the season, six more first round defeats followed, including at the US Open . Only in St. Petersburg could he reach the second round of an ATP tournament in October 2011. In September Rosol also made his debut for the Czech Davis Cup team when he contributed a single victory to the 5-0 win over Romania. After participating in the semi-finals at the Challenger tournament in Bratislava , Rosol finally ended his best season to date in 70th place in the world rankings.

2012: First ATP double title

In January 2012 Lukáš Rosol lost, as in the previous year, in the first round of the ATP tournament in Doha . In doubles, he was able to surprisingly move into the final at the side of Filip Polášek . There the Czech-Slovak duo prevailed in two sets against Christopher Kas and Philipp Kohlschreiber and won their first joint ATP title. On his Australian Open debut, Rosol was only able to win two games against Philipp Petzschner and lost after just 85 minutes of play with 0: 6, 0: 6 and 2: 6. In March 2012, Rosol reached the third round of the Masters tournament in Miami after victories over the top 50 players Michaël Llodra and Marcel Granollers , where he was eliminated by Kei Nishikori . Rosol's match against Rafael Nadal in the second round of Wimbledon, which he won in five sets, caused a sensation .

From 2013: Two single ATP titles and two further double titles

By May 2013, Rosol improved its world ranking position seven times. At the Australian Open he reached the second round, at the PBZ Zagreb Indoors the quarter-finals and at the tournament in Dubai the second round. In Bucharest he defeated the seeded players Andreas Seppi , Viktor Troicki and Gilles Simon . He finally won his first ATP tournament against Guillermo García-López . In October he secured his second double title on the World Tour with Florin Mergea in Vienna . They defeated Julian Knowle and Daniel Nestor 7: 5 and 6: 4 in the final . The following season was Rosol's most successful: in March he first won the Challenger tournament in Irving , before reaching the final in Bucharest a month later . Against Grigor Dimitrov he was unsuccessful in two sets. In June, he won two titles on the Challenger Tour, both of them in the Czech Republic. At the beginning of the month he won the doubles competition with Andre Begemann in Prostějov , followed by victory in the singles competition in Prague in the middle of the month with a final victory over Jiří Veselý . At the ATP tournament in Stuttgart , Rosol reached the third finals on the World Tour in individual. After a set deficit he equalized against Roberto Bautista Agut , but finally lost the game with 2: 6 in the third set. Only two weeks later he won the doubles competition with František Čermák at the ATP tournament in Umag . In fourth place they played their way to the final, in which they defeated Dušan Lajović and Franko Škugor 6: 3 and 6: 1. Rosol reached his third ATP individual final of the season and fourth of his career shortly afterwards in Winston-Salem . He secured his second ATP individual title against Jerzy Janowicz with a three-set win. On September 22nd, 2014, Rosol occupied his career record with rank 26 due to his season successes in the individual world rankings. He also reached his career high in doubles that season when he was placed 37th on October 13th.

Since 2015, Rosol has not had any major successes. In 2015 he reached the quarter-finals in doubles at the French Open , his best result in a Grand Slam tournament. However, he no longer made it to the finals on the World Tour, especially since he had several problems with injuries. It wasn't until 2018 that he made his comeback, now injury-free, with tournament victories on the Challenger Tour . In July 2018 he secured the single title in Prague and a month later the double title in Portorož and another double title in October in Almaty .

Davis Cup

Lukáš Rosol has been playing for the Czech Davis Cup team since 2011 . In the 2012 season, the team qualified for the second time after 2009 for the final, which was held in Prague . Lukáš Rosol was in the final against Spain , but was not used; The Czech Republic won the Davis Cup with a 3-2 victory. He played against Italy in the first round and Serbia in the quarter-finals. He played a single, which he won against Andreas Seppi and Viktor Troicki . In 2013 he successfully defended the title with the Czech Republic, but, as in the previous year, did not appear in the final. He played a total of four individual games in the first round, in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, of which he won two and a double game with Tomáš Berdych . The two won this with 24:22 in the fifth set against Switzerland .
