The Jamaican Usain Bolt went into this final as the clear favorite. At the end of May he had set a new world record. In the heats and especially his semi-finals, he had dominated his opponents with provocative casualness in a way that had hardly been the case before. The biggest competitor was his compatriot Asafa Powell, winner of the second semifinals, who, however, repeatedly failed on his nerves at major championships. At the 2007 World Championships he had to be satisfied with bronze as the clear favorite in the end. Of the Americans, Walter Dix and Darvis Patton had reached the finals, while world champion Tyson Gay was eliminated in the semifinals.
In the final, three Jamaicans, two US-Americans, two runners from Trinidad and Tobago and a sprinter from the Netherlands Antilles faced each other. H. only athletes from the American continent or the Caribbean islands were represented in this final.
While the field was pretty much on par for the first forty meters or so, the favorite Bolt literally exploded on the second half of the route and spread his arms with joy well before reaching the finish line. Usain Bolt won in the previously demonstrated arrogant-looking casualness with a previously unknown superiority of a 100-meter runner. He wasted an even faster time, but still set a new world record with 9.69 seconds. Behind him, the competitors, almost demoted to extras, fought for the remaining medals. Richard Thompson from Trinidad and Tobago surprisingly won silver, Walter Dix came third ahead of Churandy Martina from the Netherlands Antilles. Asafa Powell was fifth once again unable to use his great potential at the crucial moment. He was even a little slower than when he won the semifinals. His compatriot Michael Frater was sixth under ten seconds. For the first time, six of the eight finalists undercut the 10-second mark.
There was definitely criticism for Bolt's provocative behavior, including a. by Kriss Akabusi , a former world-class 400-meter runner, who accused Bolt of preventing an even faster record time. IOC President Jacques Rogge saw in Bolt's attitude a lack of respect for his fellow campaigners.
Usain Bolt won the first ever Olympic gold medal for a Jamaican over 100 meters .
In the course of the competition, Churandy Martina was able to improve the national record of the Netherlands Antilles twice.
