The House of Representatives of Cyprus ( Greek Βουλή των Αντιπροσώπων Vouli ton Antiprosópon , Turkish Temsilciler Meclisi ) is the parliament of the Republic of Cyprus .

Of the 80 seats held by MPs, 56 are Greek-speaking and 24 Turkish-speaking Cypriots. The latter mandates have remained vacant since the events of 1963/1964. The legislative period is five years. The 56 seats are elected in six constituencies using proportional representation. There is a legal obligation to vote . The religious groups Armenians , Latins and Maronites each send an elected representative to the House of Representatives, who is not entitled to vote, but otherwise has all the rights of the MPs.

There is no vote of no confidence . The Cypriot MPs therefore control the government through budget legislation and through requests that can be used to force a public statement.

    General

Nikos Anastasiadis (DISY, Christian Democratic Conservative Party) has been the head of state and government since February 28, 2013 . He was elected on February 24, 2013 in the second ballot with 57.5 percent of the vote.

In the Republic of Cyprus, the presidential elections (next election in February 2018) are of great importance. The president is directly elected by the people and appoints the ministers (they may not belong to parliament).

The House of Representatives is elected in general elections on the basis of proportional representation. A party must achieve at least 1/56 of the valid votes in order to be able to move into parliament with at least one member.

On June 2, 2011, the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus elected the chairman of the EDEK (socialists), Yiannakis Omirou, with the votes of the then opposition (DISY, EDEK, EVROKO and a DIKO deviator) as its new president.

    Parliament building

The modern building of the House of Representatives was built in 2006 in Nicosia. Archaeological finds were made during the construction on Agios Georgios hill.
