The Simpsons is the first animated feature film based on the animated series The Simpsons . It was produced by Gracie Films for 20th Century Fox and animated by Film Roman and Rough Draft studios. The film opened in Great Britain on July 25th and in Germany on July 26th 2007, while in the United States the film did not release until July 27th 2007.

The film was produced by James L. Brooks , Matt Groening , Al Jean, Mike Scully and Richard Sakai. The script was written by eleven of the TV series' writers: Mike Scully , Jean, Brooks, Groening, Ian Maxtone-Graham , George Meyer, David Mirkin , Mike Reiss, Matt Selman, John Swartzwelder and Jon Vitti. The director was David Silverman , a former director of the television series.

The film was released on December 18, 2007 in the United States and on December 3, 2007 in Germany on DVD and Blu-ray.

action

The film begins with the Simpsons watching an " Itchy & Scratchy " movie in the cinema, whereupon Father Homer Simpson pokes fun at the moviegoers for spending money on something they can have for free on TV. The film then begins like any TV episode, but - with the exception of the school scene with his son Bart ("I am not allowed to download this film illegally") - with completely different scenes. After that, Green Day will give a concert at Lake Springfield where they turn the audience against them by bringing up pollution . You perish when the pollution of the lake leads to the formation of a caustic liquid that eats up the swimming stage, so that Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt with the words "Gentlemen, it was an honor to be able to play with you" (a nod to the movie Titanic ), drowns with his bandmates in Lake Springfield.

During the funeral service for the band, Abe Simpson (Grandpa) has a vision: According to this, a major catastrophe should occur. Except for Mother Marge Simpson , nobody pays attention to his words. Her daughter Lisa tries to convince the residents of Springfield that Lake Springfield needs cleaning, which she initially fails. But she meets the Irish boy Colin, with whom she falls head over heels in love. Lisa later gave a lecture on pollution (a nod to the documentary An Inconvenient Truth ) that finally convinced the city to whip Lake Springfield back into shape. Since Lisa is convinced that she cannot get any citizen to take action, she poured water for all visitors beforehand - for which she later explained that it was water from Lake Springfield.

Meanwhile, Homer bets Bart that he doesn't dare go naked on a skateboard to Krusty Burger. While trying, Bart is caught by Chief Wiggum and chained to a lantern. Ned Flanders comforts Bart after his humiliation. He gives him a spare pair of pants while Homer ignores Bart and adopts a pig (later also known as the Spider Pig ). Homer keeps the pig's faeces in an overflowing silo , which causes Marge to persuade Homer to dispose of the silo and its excrement at the hazardous waste dump. The line in front of the landfill is long, but Homer wants to go to Lard Lad quickly because there are free donuts there. Homer decides on a faster disposal strategy and throws the silo in Lake Springfield, causing it to tip over for good . Shortly afterwards, Flanders and Bart discover a mutant squirrel nearby, which is promptly captured by the EPA . Russ Cargill, head of the EPA, urges President Schwarzenegger to take drastic measures to prevent the worst of the pollution in Springfield. At President Schwarzenegger's prompt decision, the EPA put a giant glass dome over Springfield. It is thus hermetically sealed from the outside world. In one scene, Marge knits a kind of blanket with the inscription "Dome Sweet Dome" based on the well-known phrase "Home sweet home" and illustrates how citizens are initially coming to terms with the dilemma. She discovers Maggie outside the dome. But when she calls Homer to tell him about this, he shows her that Maggie is playing in the sandpit inside the dome. After the two have gone back inside, Maggie can be seen sliding through a hole in the sandpit and emerging from a second hole outside the dome. It is about the hole in the ground that Homer was supposed to plug towards the beginning of the film, but out of laziness he just pushed the sandpit over it.

A little later the police discovered Homer's silo in the lake and identified him by the inscription: "Return to Homer Simpson (no reward)" . An angry crowd then goes to the Simpsons' house to punish Homer for what he did. Through the hole in the floor through which the dome Maggie was able to leave shortly before the rest of the family on the other side of the dome and Homer's idea flees back on to Alaska . To get there, Homer wins a pickup truck by rollover with a motorcycle in a steel mesh ball. In Springfield, chaos breaks out due to the supply shortage and the residents try to destroy the dome. When the dome begins to splinter, Cargill manipulates the president into choosing to completely destroy Springfield. While the Simpsons are comfortable in Alaska, they see a TV commercial with Tom Hanks promoting a new Grand Canyon (in the shape of a smoking crater) to be built where Springfield is. Marge and the children decide to save Springfield; but Homer doesn't want to save the town that tried to kill him. Marge and the children leave him and take the train to Springfield. When Homer discovers that Marge and the children have left him, he tries to find them, but gets lost in the ice. An Inuit woman saves him; he has an epiphany with her : he has to save Springfield in order to save himself and the people he loves.

Meanwhile, Marge, Lisa, Maggie and Bart are captured by Cargill and taken to Springfield. Cargill tells the city on a big screen on the dome that Springfield will soon be a thing of the past. A helicopter approaches, opens a lock on the highest point of the dome and drops a bomb on a rope. People use this rope to try to escape from Springfield, while Cletus distracts Cargill. Meanwhile, Homer climbs the dome and lowers himself on the steel bomb rope, throwing the fleeing people down. Accordingly, he is booed by everyone and pelted with stones. Bart, the only one of his family to be able to observe the whole action, turns away from him and in return is practically adopted by Flanders. As Bart himself says, before his death he would like to experience again what fatherly love is. Homer, who actually only wants to make up with Marge, remembers at that moment how he rolled over to win the pickup. He wants to ride a motorcycle up the inside of the dome to get to the still-open lock. Before doing this, however, he asks his son to forgive him and to accept him again as his father. Bart initially refuses, but when Homer offers to hold the bomb during the drive, he agrees. Bart manages to throw the bomb through the hole, it detonates and destroys the glass dome. After Chief Wiggum explains that no one was killed, a large splinter of the dome falls on Dr. Nick Riviera down. Homer and Bart are very proud of their accomplishments, but they are immediately tracked down by Cargill who wants to shoot Homer. Maggie throws a stone from ambush at Cargill's head, who falls unconscious immediately afterwards. Homer comments on his rescue by loudly rejoicing over what happened to that little accident (Maggie). The town celebrates Homer driving off into the sunset with Marge and Maggie. The film ends with all springfielders rebuilding the city, including the house of the Simpsons. Again the scene can be seen in which Homer and Bart are sitting on the roof and the former is trying to drive in a nail. Despite Bart's help, this attempt also fails spectacularly, but in a different way than the first time.

Running gags from the series

Some running gags already known from the series are continued in the film:

  • There is a so-called table gag in the opening credits. Bart writes the sentence "I am not allowed to illegally download this film" on the board of his school because he has to be detained.
  • The series always insistently hides where Springfield is. This is exaggerated in the film when Ned Flanders Bart explains that Springfield borders on four states: Ohio , Nevada , Maine and Kentucky , which, however, are scattered across the United States, except for the neighboring states of Ohio and Kentucky . In the credits, when the location of Springfield is named, the state designation that follows in American usage is blacked out.
  • Bart's notorious choking of Homer with insults of some kind: When Bart loses Flanders' fishing rod, he automatically falls into croaking with his mouth wide open, until after a while he realizes that Flanders, unlike Homer, is not choking him at all.
  • Nelson Muntz ' "Haha" : After Bart is chained naked to a lamp post, Nelson comes and laughs until sunset while pointing at Bart. Later Nelson's mother comes up and asks where he was. When her gaze falls on Bart, she too begins to initiate the famous laughter.
  • Homer's “No!” : When he is hanging on the wrecking ball and being hit alternately against a stone and a house called A Hard Place , he uses this expression with every hit. This is also a reference to the English idiom to be caught between a rock and a hard place , which means something like being in a tight spot .
  • Bart's “Ay Caramba” , which he usually says when he wants to convey something cool at school.
  • Mr. Burns' "Excellent" : He says this every time he seems to like something.
  • At the beginning of the film, the church notice board is used for the inscription: “You should turn off your cell phone.” In the series, too, mostly (in) meaningful inscriptions can be seen. At the end, however, the notice board shows “we've told you so”, which translates to “we told you so” in German.

music

Hans Zimmer's soundtrack was released on July 24, 2007 by Adrenaline Music. The band Green Day contributed a version of the Simpsons theme song for the soundtrack.

  • The film wasn't traditionally animated. The backgrounds were created using computers.
  • The film had a budget of approximately $ 75 million. On the first day after its official release, the film grossed over 29 million US dollars in the USA.
  • The film premiered in Springfield, Vermont . Twentieth Century Fox had announced a competition in which one Springfield from 16 Springfields in the USA was selected to host the premiere. The cities should create an application video by June 25th and explain why they are the right Springfield.
  • Initially, the premiere of the film was planned for the summer of 2008 and was announced by 20th Century Fox. At the end of March 2006, however, 20th Century Fox surprised Simpsons fans when a 25-second teaser was shown before the movie Ice Age 2 - Now is thawing , in which The Simpsons Movie was announced for July 27, 2007.

Reviews

In view of the extension of the length of the TV episode from 23 minutes to a full-length film, many worried that the format change would be successful. The German-language film critics agree that the Simpsons made the leap to the big screen. One will be brilliantly entertained ( film service ) by a masterpiece ( Der Spiegel ), a "hilariously cheeky satire" . epd Film and film-dienst both speak of a gag fireworks display, Cinema and Die Welt note an unbelievable density of jokes, Die Presse many punch lines. In a positive meeting that thinks Frankfurter Rundschau , the makers would have "very nice visual gags reserved for the big screen." The Taz says Diedrich Diedrichsen , the film is tightly cite also self-reflexive gags and "industrial producibility of obsessions, humor and Criticism at the highest level. ” However, Focus estimates that the movie is a little less cheeky and snappy than the best TV episodes. There is broad agreement in the assessment that the film hardly develops any new facets beyond the well-known Simpson universe and is limited to the familiar and tried and tested - but in a deluxe edition. Both epd Film and Die Presse believe that the pace of the short TV episodes is maintained in the cinema . In the traditional 2-D cartoon, the mirror sees a fanal against, Focus "a refreshing change" to the perfected Shreks and Nemos . According to epd Film , the widescreen breaks the narrowness of the television format: "The Simpsons' panoramic view of America seems to have found its ideal form in the cinema, of all places," and there is no more ironic image for Bush America than the cheese bell.

success

Film premiere in Springfield, Vermont on July 21, 2007

In the USA the film had the best non- sequel start of 2007 and the fifth best overall, and in Germany the best cartoon film start ever. A total of $ 74 million was made after the weekend in the USA, and in Germany the film had over 1.6 million viewers on the first weekend. It received a gold screen for three million visitors in Germany after only 11 days and passed the 100 million dollar mark in the USA after just seven days. Overall, the film has grossed $ 343.9 million outside of the United States. Worldwide, the film grossed around $ 527.1 million, making it the 181st most successful film of all time (as of August 12, 2018).

Possible continuation

Both the end credits of the film, in which Maggie speaks of a sequel , as well as episode 1 of the 19th season, in which Bart's motto is translated as "I won't wait 20 years before I make another film," suggest that Groening and 20th Century Fox wanted to bring a second Simpsons film or a sequel to the cinemas in the foreseeable future. Allegedly, Groening is said to have already announced the same at the premiere of the film. However, Groening said that the series is currently working on the next two seasons. In a later Simpsons episode, Lisa makes a documentary about her family. This is initially accompanied by keen public interest, so she asks her mother if she should produce a sequel. Marge replied resolutely: "One Simpsons movie is more than enough!".

In Futurama , Velrrrück after Ndndir is also alluded to : Bender asks Matt Groening's head when he will make a second Simpsons film, whereupon he is shot by Groening.
