The Extraliga ( officially Tipsport Extraliga ledního hokeje) is the top division in Czech ice hockey . The league is one of the ten best ice hockey leagues in the world.

history

Logo of the O 2 Extraliga

The Extraliga was introduced after the break-up of Czechoslovakia for the 1993/94 season. The league was operated from 2000 to 2012 by the Association of Professional Clubs ( Czech Asociace profesionálních klubů ledního hokeje, APK LH).

Since its inception, the league has mostly carried the title of sponsor in its name, so it was called Staropramen Extraliga from 1997 to 2000 , Český Telecom Extraliga from 2000 to 2003 , Tipsport Extraliga from 2003 to 2006 and O 2 Extraliga between 2006 and 2010 . In 2010 Tipsport took over the name sponsorship of the league again.

Participants and championships

Extraliga game in the O2 Arena

Initially only twelve teams took part, since 1995 there have been fourteen. In the founding season, HC Olomouc surprisingly won , it was the club's first and to date only championship title. From 1994 the HC Vsetín dominated the league. From 1995 to 1999 he won all five championships. In 2000 Vsetín was second behind Sparta Prague , in 2001 Vsetín secured his sixth and, for the time being, last championship title. In the following years the fight for the championship became much more evenly balanced, one after the other Sparta Prague (2002), Slavia Prague (2003), HC Hamé Zlín (2004), HC Moeller Pardubice (2005) and again Sparta Prague (2006 and 2007) the title of Czech ice hockey champion. Sparta's local rivals HC Slavia Prague secured the title in 2008 with a 4: 3 victory in the final series against HC Energie Karlovy Vary , while a year later the team from Karlovy Vary triumphed 4: 2 over Slavia and became Czech champions for the first time.

In the course of the 2012/13 season , the Extraliga agreed on a sponsorship contract with the Radegast brewery, which from 2013 received exclusive serving permits in all stadiums of the league. This contract collided with the current contract between the city of Budweis and the Budweiser Budvar Brewery regarding the naming and serving rights of the Budvar Aréna , which provided for high penalties for serving a different beer brand than Budweiser in the arena. After no agreement could be reached between the conflicting parties, the Extraliga license (including the current sponsorship, player and employee contracts) of HC České Budějovice was sold to a newly founded operating company, Mountfield HK as , from Hradec Králové . HC České Budějovice then took over the starting position of HC Hradec Králové in the first division , while the latter has been participating in the extra division as Mountfield HK since 2013 .

The presidential cup for the winner of the main round
The T.-G.-Masaryk-Pokal for the winner of the play-offs

After an unsuccessful season as bottom of the table after the main round , HC Slavia Prague had to accept relegation to the second division after 21 years in the top division in spring 2015 . Under the leadership of former NHL players Jaromír Jágr and Tomáš Plekanec , the Rytíři Kladno managed to return to the extra league in 2019 after five years in the second division. After only one year in the extra league, Kladno rose again to the second division.

Promotion and relegation regulations

The Czech extra league is also at war with antitrust law. At least since a change of mode was decided in 2006. The promotion / relegation games were abolished in this format after nine years. The league should be closed, whereby the champion of the second highest league would be allowed for a fee of 900,000 euros. The Czech Competition Commission condemned the mode as a cartel and awarded the future champions of the second highest division the right to promotion without such a payment. Because the promotion / relegation games were missing in the Extraliga mode, the future champions of the second-highest division, Ústí nad Labem, had to be included as the 15th team. Resistance to this newcomer was low after the judge's decision, instead the financially troubled club Vsetín, which was 29 points behind the table, was excluded. Because some license conditions were met too late, Vsetín was kicked out of the extra league by vote. The club was then not included in the game plan of the highest or the second highest league. Vsetín went before an association court, the decision of which, however, gave the league association right. Therefore, the HC Slovan Ústečtí Lvi was accepted into the extra league without relegation and admission fee.

During the 2011/12 season there were renewed attempts by the APK to turn the extra league into a closed league without promotion and relegation due to the difficult economic situation of the clubs. A salary cap should also be introduced. In December 2011 the APK terminated the contract for the implementation of the Extraliga with the Czech association in order to achieve a better starting position in the negotiations for a new contract and the desired closure of the league. Therefore, the contract between the association and APK expired in May 2012, so that since then the Czech association has operated and regulated the Extraliga alone. As a result, a new relegation round was introduced from the 2012/13 season, which includes the two losers of the Extraliga playouts and the two playoff finalists of the 1st division. This means that from 2013 there will be a maximum of two promoted and relegated teams between the first and second division. For the 2019/20 season, the play-outs and the league delegation were abolished, instead the last of the Extraliga main round will be relegated directly and the play-off winner of the 1st division directly promoted.

mode

14 professional teams play for the Czech championship. In 52 games, all teams play against each other four times, each team has 26 home and 26 away games throughout the season. The teams in places 1 to 8 qualified directly for the play-offs by 2006, which were played in the best-of-seven mode. The bottom of the table in the main round played until 2006 in the relegation in best-of-seven mode against the top of the table in the first division to remain in the extra league .

In 2006 the three-point system was introduced in the Extraliga, i.e. H. the winner after regular playing time receives three points, the loser no points. In the event of a tie, both parties receive one point each, an additional point is awarded in overtime or in the penalty shootout . Between 2006 and 2008, the player statistics of the Extraliga only included one submission provider, not two preparers, as is customary internationally, in order to emphasize the value of the goal and the decisive pass in the statistics.

Since the 2006/07 season, the teams in places 1st to 6th have qualified directly for the play-offs, the teams in places 7th to 10th play the other two places in pre-play-offs (best of-three). In the 2006/07 season, no relegation round was planned in the game mode, instead new teams should be promoted by buying licenses. This regulation was overturned by a sports court, so that from 2007 play-outs of the teams in places 11th to 14th with subsequent league relegation (14th place against champions of the 1st division) were introduced.

From the 2012/13 season, an extended relegation round was introduced, which includes the two losers in the Extraliga playouts and the two playoff finalists of the 1st division. Since 2013, there have been a maximum of two promoted and relegated teams between the first and second division.

The winner of the play-offs has received the Pohár TG Masaryka (T.-G.-Masaryk-Pokal) as the Czech champions since the 2013/14 season .
