history

By the end of the 18th century

During excavations in the north of today's city, indications of Celtic , Roman and Alemannic settlement were found. On the eastern slope of the Wertach valley, an extensive Roman-era pottery village was uncovered, which Hermann Kuntz identified with the place Rapis (or Rapae) from the Tabula Peutingeriana . The first inhabitants of this place settled in the reign of Emperor Claudius (41–54 AD). Among them were various craftsmen, bronze casters and blacksmiths who understood the art of smelting iron from raw ore. The townscape was dominated by elongated half-timbered buildings with the gable side facing the street. Only the bathhouse and a building that probably served as a temple were made of stone. Rapis developed into the largest Roman pottery center in northern Raetia. The place had only about 125 inhabitants, but more than 80% of them made a living from ceramic production. Thirteen of sixteen properties housed pottery. The house and workshop formed a unit. The whole family worked in the small businesses, including the children. Household dishes for cellars, kitchens and tables have been produced in Rapis for almost 200 years. The extensive range ranged from small oil lamps to meter-high storage jars. The most important export item was the mortarium , the common multi-purpose device of the Roman kitchen. Because of their quality, the rapis bowls were valued and widely used. They were traded as far as the lower Danube region. Around 260 AD, Rapis was attacked in the German Wars, most of the pottery workshops were destroyed and many residents were killed. The survivors were unable to revive ceramic production. The last inhabitants left the village at the beginning of the 5th century. The finds from the Alemannic period date from the first half of the 6th century.

The place was given according to tradition by Charlemagne the Augsburg Bishop and belonged to the secularization of the Augsburg bishopric . In Schwabegg, a district of Schwabmünchen, there are the remains of a former refuge from the time of the Hungarian invasions . It is dated around the year 950 AD and it has the name Haldenburg . Schwabmünchen was first mentioned in 954 as castellum Mantahinga in a biography of the Bishop of Augsburg, St. Ulrich . In 1562 the place was raised to a market town by Emperor Ferdinand I and received a market coat of arms.

From the 19th century

Between 1804 and 1806 Schwabmünchen came under Bavarian rule and became the seat of an older regional court. With the construction of the Augsburg – Buchloe railway line (1847) and the construction of a Schranne (1855), an economic upswing set in. a. in the construction of schools and a new hospital (1899/1900). In 1900 the market town became the seat of the district office Schwabmünchen (later district Schwabmünchen ), which was formed in the course of a reorganization through the division of the district office Augsburg.

On March 4, 1945, Schwabmünchen was hit by a heavy bomb attack, in which 61 residents were killed. As prisoners of war, Poles and so-called Eastern workers were generally prohibited from accessing air raid shelters from 1942 onwards, the victims included four Eastern European and Russian slave laborers : three men from the Kroen camp and one female slave laborer who was recorded as a farm worker. A quarter of the urban area was totally destroyed, two thirds were badly damaged. On April 27, 1945, the Americans marched into Schwabmünchen without a fight.

After the Second World War , the population grew strongly due to the influx of displaced people and so Schwabmünchen was elevated from market to town in 1953. On July 1, 1972, as part of the district reform, the former Schwabmünchen district with parts of the Wertingen district was incorporated into the Augsburg-West district, which was renamed the Augsburg district on May 1, 1973 .
