World Cup (table tennis)
The World Cup is a table tennis tournament organized by the world table tennis association ITTF . The ITTF commissions a member country to organize the tournament. There are individual competitions for women and men - the World Cup - and team competitions for women and men - the World Team Cup .
Individual competitions - World Cup
The individual competitions for men have been held annually since 1980 and for women since 1996. The conditions are described in the ITTF manual in chapter 4.03.
Are eligible to participate
- the reigning world champion in singles
- the top three of the Asian Cup and the Europe Top 16 Cup
- the winners of the Africa Cup, the Oceania Cup and the Panamerica Cup
- in the case of a Latin or North American winner of the Panamerica Cup, the best placed on the other continent
For seven further places, the players who are best placed in the respective continental competitions are compared with each other and the place is awarded to the best placed in the world rankings. Another place goes to a representative of the host country if no one has qualified yet, otherwise an eighth player moves up according to the above rule. The ITTF issues a wildcard for this purpose .
A maximum of two players per nation may compete. When qualifying via the continental competitions, excess qualifiers from an association will be ignored.
