The Austrian Football Championship 1992/93 was organized by the Austrian Football Association . The first-class 1st division and the second-class 2nd division were merged this season through a playoff mode. The regional league east (Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland) and west (Salzburg, Tyrol, Vorarlberg) as well as the regional leagues of Carinthia, Upper Austria and Styria acted as the third performance level .

Playoff leagues (1st and 2nd division)

mode

The championship in the 1st and 2nd division was initially held in autumn with 12 teams each in a single round, so that each team initially completed 22 games. This was followed by the division into the championship playoff (1st to 8th of the 1st division), middle playoff (9th to 12th of the 1st division and 1st to 4th of the 2nd division) and relegation playoff (5th to 12th division) . to 12th of the 2nd division) for the spring championship. This meant that in the master playoff champions and European Cup starting places were determined, in the middle playoff promotions and relegations between 1st and 2nd division and in the relegation playoff the relegated to the regional and national leagues. In the championship and relegation playoffs, games, goals and points were taken into spring. The points were halved (and the result rounded up if necessary) to increase the tension in the spring. Naturally, the teams in the middle playoff did not take any points and goals from autumn into the spring season.

General

In the 1992/93 season of the Austrian championship in the 1st division there was a new edition of the previous year's duel between Vienna Austria and Salzburg Austria. After Vienna Austria lost seven rounds to the bottom of the table, Vorwärts Steyr, 0: 1, Salzburg's advantage increased to five points, which were almost impossible to catch up with a two-point rule. Ultimately, the Viennese managed to win all six outstanding games - including a 3-1 win at their direct competitor in Lehen. After Rapid also gave rifle help, Vienna Austria moved back to the top of the table for the first time with equal points and was able to maintain it with a 4-0 win on the last match day against Rapid in the Prater Stadium. Ivanauska's side puller to 1-0 was later voted Goal of the Year. Wiener Austria was thus qualified for the 1994 UEFA Champions League , cup winner Wacker Innsbruck was allowed to take part in the 1994 European Cup , but withdrew in favor of the new license holder FC Tirol Innsbruck. Salzburger Austria and Admira / Wacker started in the 1994 UEFA Cup . The most successful club was SV Austria Salzburg, which made it to the final in the UEFA Cup and only failed there against Inter Milan.

Various from the seasonal chronicle

  • The match between Sturm Graz and Vorwärts Steyr on August 12th (1: 3), in which Graz and their fans were not satisfied with the decisions of Salzburg referee Richard Heugenhauser, led to riots after the game. The responsible penal committee had a place ban for a match, which was struck on September 5 in the game against Austria Salzburg (1: 2). The Grazers avoided the Alpenstadion in Kapfenberg.
  • Also on August 12th, the first coaching change was not unexpected. Felix Latzke , who received a contract until June 30, 1993, took over from Dieter Mirnegg after the 0: 1 of FC Stahl Linz in the derby against Linz ASK .
  • It was reported about the newcomer SV Oberwart that its annual budget of 6 million schillings is financed from tent festivals and canteen sales.
  • The engagement of Kazimir Vulic, transferred from NK Rijeka, to the Grazer AK was very short for the time being : the Croatian already suffered a torsional fracture in his right fibula and a torn ankle ligament the next day during training after a collision with teammate René Pauritsch during training . (It was not until March 6, 1993 that he was able to play in the championship for the first time (in the away match at the Grazer Derby, 0: 2).)
