history

In 1413 the place was mentioned for the first time as Altenroede in the " Treasury register of the Cologne St. Serverinstift for Fronhof Lindlar ".

Altenrath (then known as Altenroide or Altenroede ) was probably created much earlier, in the early days of Lindlar's emergence, immediately after the early clearing work began in the late 10th century.

The place name in this context is largely self-explanatory: Altenrath is the " old clearing ". Julius Leithäuser explains: “ The verb roden (Central German form for hd. Rotten and ablaut to rue) means: to free the bond from forest [...] and thereby make arable; [...] ". According to Arnold, the word belongs to the third, youngest period of the ON (9th – 12th centuries), although some names are older.

In the Middle Ages, Altenrath was part of the Fronhof association and the Lindlar parish. The tithe also had to be handed in at the Fronhof in Lindlar. 1413 was mentioned in the documents: " 1 Hof, de universis bladis suis seminatis ".

In the 17th century the parish of Lindlar and Hohkeppel was divided into a total of 10 honors, Altenrath was part of the Oberhelling honors at this time .

The Topographia Ducatus Montani by Erich Philipp Ploennies , Blatt Amt Steinbach , shows that the residential area had four farms as early as 1715, which are labeled as Altenrodt . Carl Friedrich von Wiebeking names the court on his charter of the Duchy of Berg in 1789 as Altenrath .

The place is recorded on the topographical survey of the Rhineland from 1825 as Altenrath . The Prussian first recording from 1840 shows the residential area also under the name Altenrath . From the Prussian new admission of 1894/96, the place is regularly recorded as Altenrath on measuring table sheets .

In 1822 38 people lived in the place categorized as Hof and designated (Alten) Rath , which after the collapse of the Napoleonic administration and its replacement belonged to the Lindlar mayor in the Wipperfürth district . For the year 1830 40 inhabitants are given for the place called Altenrath . The place, categorized as a hamlet in 1845 according to the overview of the government district of Cologne , had 16 residential buildings with 185 inhabitants at that time, all of them Catholic faiths. The local and Gutbezirksstatistik the Rhine Province leads Altenrath 1871 with 37 houses and 167 residents. In the municipality lexicon for the Rhineland province of 1888, 28 residential buildings with 171 inhabitants are given for Altenrath . In 1895 the place had 28 houses with 179 inhabitants and belonged denominationally to the Protestant parish of Ründeroth . In 1905 31 houses and 192 inhabitants are given.

In 1894, the municipality of Lindlar purchased new fire extinguishers, including a two-wheel pressure sprayer for Altenrath.

In 1902 a telephone line was set up from Cologne via Immekeppel , Altenrath and Remshagen to Gummersbach . In 1925 the St. Johannes Schützenbruderschaft Helling 1925 eV was founded, which still exists today.

In 1933, at the instigation of the NSDAP district leadership, citizens of Altenrath with different political views were deported to Porz, where they were interrogated, mistreated and only released after a few days. As a result, the death of a resident of Altenrath was to be lamented.
