Betton is a French municipality with 11,735 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Ille-et-Vilaine in the region of Brittany .

geography

Betton is nine kilometers north of Rennes , the capital of Brittany . The city is crossed by the river Ille , which here forms a section of the Canal d'Ille-et-Rance and is therefore navigable. Today the canal is only of touristic importance. The place has a train station on the Rennes – Saint-Malo railway line .

history

Today's Betton was already occupied by the Franks in the 4th to 5th centuries and they named it after one of their leaders: Betto. The place was Christianized as early as 470 by Gallo-Roman missionaries who built a monastery there: monasterium Betonis.
