Mairie Montreuil-sur-Ille |
Montreuil-sur-Ille is a French commune with 2,383 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Ille-et-Vilaine in the region of Brittany .
geography
Montreuil-sur-Ille is about 30 kilometers north of Rennes , the capital of Brittany . The city is crossed by the river Ille , which from here becomes part of the Canal d'Ille-et-Rance . The canalised Ille is navigable from here to Rennes. If you follow the canal in the other direction, you will reach the English Channel at Saint-Malo . Today the canal is only of touristic importance.
history
The name of the community comes from the Latin Monasteriolum Sulerinsulam , which means a small monastery on the Ille. In the 12th century, the place around this monastery developed, of which no traces can be found today. With the construction of the Canal d'Ille-et-Rance and later a parallel railway connection ( Rennes-Saint-Malo line ), the settlement of industrial companies was favored in the 19th century: tanning factories , tannery , dairy industry, etc.
