Mairie Fontenelle

Fontenelle is a French commune in the department Territoire de Belfort in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Fontenelle is located 341 m above sea level, about seven kilometers east of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The village extends in the plains of the Burgundian Gate , in the valley of the Autruche between the wooded areas of the Bois de Bessoncourt in the north and the Grands Bois in the south.

The area of the 1.75 km² large municipal area comprises a section of the landscape in the area of the Burgundian Gate (Trouée de Belfort) with only weak relief. The central part of the area is crossed in a north-west-south-east direction by the valley basin of the Autruche, which flows into the Madeleine below the village and provides drainage over the Bourbeuse to the Allaine . The flat valley floor is approximately 400 m wide. At Fontenelle, the Autruche receives an inflow from the Clavelière. To the north, the municipality extends to the edge of the Bois de Bessoncourt. South of the Autruche, the slope rises gently to the adjacent plateau of Les Grands Bois. Fontenelle's highest point is reached here at 369 m.

Neighboring municipalities of Fontenelle are Chèvremont in the west and north, Petit-Croix in the east and Novillard and Vézelois in the south.

history

Fontenelle is first mentioned in a document in 1458. It was under the sovereignty of the Habsburgs. Together with the Sundgau , Fontenelle came to the French crown with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Since 1793 the village has belonged to the Haut-Rhin department , but in 1871 it remained as part of the Territoire de Belfort, unlike the rest of Alsace, in France. In 1973 Fontenelle was merged with Chèvremont, but in 1977 it was regained its independence as a municipality. Ecclesiastically Fontenelle always belonged to Chèvremont.

Attractions

The mill, built in 1825, which was powered by the water power of the Autruche, ceased operations in 1960. The Mairie (parish hall) dates from 1865.

With 127 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Fontenelle is one of the smallest municipalities in the Territoire de Belfort. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range between 50 and 80 people, a significant increase in population was recorded during the 1970s. Since then, the number of inhabitants has remained almost constant.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Fontenelle was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Many employed people are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns and in the Belfort agglomeration.

The village is located off the main road connections on a departmental road that leads from Belfort to Montreux-Château . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around six kilometers away. Another road connection exists with Novillard.
