Fulton County is a county in the state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Rochester .

The county is located in north-central Indiana and has an area of ​​962 square kilometers, of which seven square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Marshall County , Kosciusko County , Wabash County , Miami County , Cass County , Pulaski County, and Starke Counties .

history

Fulton County was formed on February 7, 1835 from parts of Allen County, Cass County and St. Joseph County. It was named after Robert Fulton , an American engineer who built the first usable steamships and the Nautilus submarine .

As of the 2000 census , Fulton County had 20,511 people in 8,082 households and 5,738 families. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.21 percent white, 0.76 percent African American, 0.38 percent Native American, 0.37 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 1.06 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.20 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.31 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 8,082 households, 31.8 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 59.5 percent were married couples living together, 7.5 percent were single mothers, and 29.0 percent were non-families. 24.9 percent were single households and 12.0 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 2.99 people.

26.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.7 percent between 18 and 24, 27.6 percent between 25 and 44 years old. 23.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 97.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 94.4 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 38,290 , and the median income for a family is $ 44,865. Males had a median income of $ 32,602 versus $ 21,657 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,950. 5.0 percent of families and 7.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
