The Georgii-Gymnasium in Esslingen am Neckar emerged from a Latin school first documented in 1267 AD and was named after Theodor Georgii in 1937 .

history

The early establishment of the Latin school probably originated in the Dominican settlement in Esslingen in the early 13th century. In 1279, the Esslingen schoolmaster Magister Henricus Scholasticus was first mentioned in a document, which is the first reliable evidence of a Latin school in Esslingen. From 1362 the Latin school was a city school and was always housed in the same house until 1910, which has been preserved until today. In 1598, at the suggestion of court preacher Lukas Osiander , a boarding school, a Collegium Alumnorum , was affiliated. In the 19th century, the language classes were also followed by the real classes. In 1840 the school became a Württemberg state examination school ; In 1861 the real classes were transferred to what would later become the Schelztor Gymnasium; In 1876 the pedagogy became a lyceum , and in 1899 the institution finally attained grammar school status. A few girls attended classes in this grammar school from an early age. In 1914 a Realgymnasium was affiliated, whose classes 4–9 were listed as "B classes" in addition to the high school "A classes". A Reich decree in 1937 brought all higher education institutions into line with secondary schools, which made it necessary to give a name. By decision of the mayor Alfred Klaiber on July 23, 1937 the name Georgii-Oberschule was chosen.

building

Until the construction of today's school building on Lohwasen, which was inaugurated in 1910, school operations took place in a building at Abt-Fulrad-Straße 3 near the market square.

The school building from 1910, designed by Gustav Blümer and decorated with sparse sculptural jewelry by Albert Gäckle , was divided into a five-story schoolhouse with a caretaker's apartment and a gym . The construction of the building was made possible, among other things, by a large donation from the Esslingen factory owner Eugen Merkel. The school building was supplemented in 1965 by an extension, a music pavilion and another sports hall. In 1985 a cafeteria was set up in the changing rooms of the old gym . In 1987 a further extension was completed which, in addition to specialist rooms for physics , chemistry and computer science, contains a photo laboratory . In the following year, the old gymnasium was converted into an auditorium with a stage system and the latest technology for acoustics and lighting. Since the school grounds are located on an island between two arms of the Neckar Canal, the space for extensions was limited, and green spaces were used for construction activities. In 2009 the so-called Glass Palace, which is used as a lounge and multimedia room, and a work room were inaugurated.

Profile and organization

Overall, a transparent concept is planned that allows students in the middle school to decide on the linguistic or scientific orientation.

Linguistic profile

As the only school in Esslingen, the Georgii-Gymnasium still offers an old-language course, which starts according to the Biberach model with the foreign languages Latin and English in grade 5 and is supplemented in grade 8 with Greek as a third foreign language. For those interested in the modern language, French is offered instead of Greek . In addition to starting with Latin, it is possible for students to start with modern foreign languages in grade 5 and to choose one of the old languages in grade 8. From grade 6 onwards, teaching is bilingual in phases . A student at Georgii- Gymnasium can acquire the certificate of the European Gymnasium through time-shifted phases of learning two modern and two ancient languages .

Scientific profile

From year 5 onwards, the subject of natural phenomena is offered in addition to the usual canon of subjects . Instead of the third foreign language, you can also choose NWT in grade 8 . Technically interested students are particularly encouraged by the possibility of participating in the student engineer academy in the course level. The Georgii-Gymnasium was recognized as a MINT-friendly school in 2012, 2015 and 2019 .

Musical-artistic profile

In the middle level, a musical and artistic focus is set with increased teaching in the main subjects of music and visual arts. Over the years, the so-called cultural driving license can be acquired.

All day offer

Since the beginning of the school year 2009/2010, the Georgii-Gymnasium is officially an open all-day school , which among other things includes the offer of homework supervision. Choir, orchestra and numerous working groups complete the range of learning content. In addition, the students can be trained to become mediators and student media mentors in various courses.

Student exchange

The Georgii-Gymnasium maintains a student exchange with the Lycée Denis de Rougemont in Neuchâtel (Switzerland) and the Lycée Jay de Beaufort in Périgueux (France). There is also the possibility of a six-month stay in Sheboygan (USA) and a language trip to Bournemouth (Great Britain).

canteen

A cafeteria was set up as early as the 1980s and was run by parents on a voluntary basis. It was initially housed in a neighboring building and later in the converted former gymnasium.

School newspaper

The school newspaper Filius has existed since 1949 and appears irregularly.

Support association

In 1953 the Association of Former Schools and Friends of Georgii-Gymnasium was founded and has around 500 members. In addition to maintaining tradition among the former students and promoting solidarity with the old school, the main focus is on financial support for the school.
