About this picture

Großröhrsdorf is a small Saxon town in the Bautzen district .

geography

The city on the Großer Röder is located about 20 kilometers east of the state capital Dresden . It stretches south of Pulsnitz about four kilometers along the Alte Poststrasse . Motorway junctions are Ohorn and Pulsnitz on the A 4 .

The closest localities in the vicinity of the city are the Großröhrsdorf districts of Bretnig and Hauswalde, immediately to the east, and Rammenau further east , the district of Kleinröhrsdorf , the districts of Leppersdorf , Lichtenberg , Wallroda and Seeligstadt that do not belong to Großröhrsdorf , the municipality of Ohorn and the cities of Radeberg and Pulsnitz .

The place on the edge of the West Lusatia landscape protection area, which originally emerged as a two-line row village and still exists today in the form of a forest hoof village , is partly surrounded by agricultural areas and extensive forest areas, the low forest north of the place and the 1500  ha large mass egg at the southern end of the village. This consists mainly of the old forest, which was the hunting area of the Saxon electoral prince until 1892 . “Massenei” probably comes from the Middle High German “mastunge”, roughly equivalent to today's word “pig fattening”. It used to be said that the pigs in the area were driven to fattening in the forest.

The highest elevation is the Oswaldsberg, located north of a former quarry, at 312 m.

history

The settlement, which was founded around 1250, was first mentioned in a document as the church village Grozen-Rudigersdorf (after the locator name Rüdiger ) in 1349. The choice of the place name results from the medieval method of naming new settlements after the colonist leaders. Originally belonging to the Pulsnitz rule, Großröhrsdorf fell to the Margravial Office of Radeberg around 1400 .

The Thirty Years' War and severe plague epidemics put considerable strain on the town and its inhabitants; in the years 1631 to 1633 alone, 304 people fell victim to the "Black Death".

Small businesses have settled in the former farming village since the 16th century. In 1680, George Hans introduced ribbon weaving in Großröhrsdorf. The introduction of this branch of industry accelerated the economic upswing of the place and was to remain the defining trade for the region for centuries. The first tape manufacturers have been mentioned in Pulsnitz court files since 1768. The place gained great importance as an important supplier for numerous branches of industry, even beyond the borders of the country. In the middle of the 19th century Großröhrsdorf was one of the largest centers for ribbon and belt weaving in Germany with 32 ribbon factories and more than 1000 ribbon looms. In 1834 Großröhrsdorf already had 2742 inhabitants. In the course of the industrialization of tape-making in 1855, the first innovations in production technology were introduced, and in 1857 the first mechanical tape loom made in England went into operation. The largest company on site was the company CG Großmann , which was founded around 1850. By 1900 it was already employing more than 1100 workers, 800 of them in the factory. The owner family created important facilities to improve the infrastructure such as the Carl-Großmann-Stift , to promote school purposes (Emil-Großmann-Stiftung) and to support workers outside the health insurance companies. In 1893 the company CG Großmann exhibited at the world exhibition in Chicago and was honored with a medal.

Metal and wood processing factories were also built in the steadily growing industrial community, which was connected to the Radeberg - Kamenz railway in 1871 . In 1887 a steam brewery opened, today's Böhmisch Brauhaus Großröhrsdorf . On October 11, 1924, Großröhrsdorf was granted city rights.

In 1945 a Soviet military tribunal sentenced five youths aged 18 and 19 (two of them girls) to death on charges of belonging to an underground organization "with an anti-communist attitude". Two death sentences were carried out, including one of the girls. The other youths were "pardoned" for 10 years in a labor camp and released from prisons in 1950 and 1954, respectively. The entire group was rehabilitated by the Russian side in 1996.

From 1972 to 1978 the nationalization of all tape industries took place and a merger to VEB Bandtex in the combine cotton with about 5000 employees. Most of the facilities and equipment in 1989 were in an extremely neglected condition. After the fall of the Wall in the GDR , ribbon production also largely came to a standstill; today only four companies continue the traditional trade. Today's company "FASchurig" emerged from the VEB Dekoband and today's company "Solidor" emerged from VEB Solidor.

On January 1, 1998, Kleinröhrsdorf was incorporated . Bretnig-Hauswalde followed on January 1, 2017 . This also ended the Großröhrsdorf administrative community .

The population of Großröhrsdorf, even in the less favorable variant, should not fall below 7,000 until 2012, but this was already the case in 2009.

City arms

Ribbon weavers, similar to the one on the city arms

With the city charter in 1924, as a result of a competition, the town received the town's coat of arms in its present form since 1926. It shows a silver ribbon archer on a blue background. Before it was granted town charter, Großröhrsdorf had a community seal showing two crossed wide-web shooters, a beehive and two ears of grain. They symbolized the determining craft of the place and the diligence of its residents.

economy

  • The Böhmisch Brauhaus Großröhrsdorf , which has existed since 1887, is located in Bahnhofstrasse.
  • The new industrial area in Großröhrsdorf, which was developed in the 1990s, houses a mix of plastics and metal processing, mechanical engineering and IT services . In 2007 the solar industry also settled here . On June 1, 2007, the groundbreaking ceremony took place for a 60 MW thin-film module production facility operated by Sunfilm AG, which had to file for bankruptcy just one year after its completion . In October 2010, Sunfilm was bought by the Bielefeld company Schüco and the production facility continued. The site was finally closed in 2012.

traffic

Großröhrsdorf station

Großröhrsdorf station is on the Kamenz – Radeberg railway line and is served by the Sachsen urban railway. The trains run on the route Dresden - Langebrück (Sachs) - Radeberg - Großröhrsdorf - Kamenz (Sachs) and drive around the Arnsdorf curve , bypassing the Arnsdorf station . To the north, the federal motorway 4, which can be reached via the Ohorn and Pulsnitz junctions, touches the urban area.

education

The city of Großröhrsdorf has a primary school, the “Praßerschule”, and the partially newly built “ Ferdinand-Sauerbruch-Gymnasium ”. Since summer 2012, this has formed the Großröhrsdorf school center together with the renovated middle and high school. The private institute for health and social affairs is also located here.

Culture and sights

The baroque town church was built in 1731/1736. The altar and baptismal font date from 1745, the portraits of Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon from 1614. In 2011, the church was the location for the wedding scenes of the TV film adaptation of Uwe Tellkamp's novel “ The Tower ”.

The town hall was built in 1907/1908 in Art Nouveau style and is a testimony to the industrially up-and-coming town at the turn of the century. In addition, numerous, spacious Art Nouveau villas and mansions shape the cityscape.

In the culture factory is the technical museum , which gives an insight into the extensive history of ribbon weaving in Großröhrsdorf. The local history museum in Mühlstrasse is set up in a half-timbered house from 1798.

On the edge of the mass egg is the mass egg bath . After its opening in 1935, it was extensively renovated between 1994 and 1996. The bath is known for its quiet location and its integration into the mass egg forest.

Others

Among the residents of Großröhrsdorf and the surrounding area, the city is also known colloquially as Gage . One theory about the origin of this name is the increased occurrence of large swarms of crows, especially in autumn, which were called “fees” in the region in dialect . As a result, the term Gage became a regional synonym for Großröhrsdorf. A distinction is made between large salary and small salary (for Kleinröhrsdorf).
