Helmut Kohl (referee)
Helmut Kohl (born February 8, 1943 , † September 26, 1991 ) was an Austrian football referee .
Kohl, who came from Nussdorf am Haunsberg in the Salzburg-Umgebung district , was a full-time municipal civil servant . He experienced his career peak as a referee at the World Cup in Italy in 1990, where he directed three games. After the preliminary round matches Uruguay - Spain and Brazil - Scotland , he was scheduled for the quarter-final pairing between the German national team and the ČSFR team .
Kohl showed the Czechoslovak Ľubomír Moravčík the red card in the 70th minute when the score was 1-0 for Germany. Moravčík was annoyed that Kohl had refused a free kick after a duel with Pierre Littbarski and then kicked his left shoe, which Littbarki had stepped on in this duel and the Moravčík slipped off his heel, in a high arc into the air. Kohl therefore sent the Czechoslovakian who had already been warned off.
Kohl died of cancer in 1991 at the age of 48. Four years later, allegations of corruption were raised against him. In 1989, after the match in the European Cup between Olympique Marseille and AEK Athens , he is said to have received the equivalent of around 50,000 euros on behalf of the French, who had reached the next round through a draw .
