The Interstate 95 (abbreviated I-95 ) is an Interstate Highway on the east coast of the United States , of the Atlantic along by several states from Florida to Maine leads. In Massachusetts , the route begins in Attleboro on the border with Rhode Island and runs in a north or northeast direction first to Canton , where it joins with Route 128 . It continues along the outskirts of the Greater Boston metropolitan area to Peabody , where it separates from Route 128 and branches north towards the Merrimack River . The route eventually goes north of Salisbury into the state of New Hampshire .
Route
From Attleboro to Canton
The I-95 crosses the state line from Pawtucket as a six-lane highway. The first two exits 2A and 2B connect to Massachusetts Route 1A and US Highway 1 . Exit 1 is a southbound exit to US Highway 1 towards Rhode Island . Exits 3 through 5 are into the Attleboro area , with Exit 4 leading to the north end of Interstate 295 (Rhode Island-Massachusetts) .
Exits 6A and 6B at Mansfield connect to Interstate 495 , which curves around Boston and provides access to Worcester , the Massachusetts Turnpike and western Massachusetts and south to Cape Cod . Mansfield is home to the Comcast Center amphitheater owned by Live Nation .
From there, I-95 continues north to Foxborough , where Gillette Stadium can be reached via Exit 9. The interstate then runs through Sharon , Walpole and Norwood before meeting the southern end of Interstate 93 in Canton (exit 12).
From Canton to Peabody (Route 128)
The route identical to Massachusetts Route 128 also begins at the intersection with I-93 . The highway continues through Westwood , Dedham , Needham and Wellesley , where it branches off to Massachusetts Route 9 at exit 20 and expands to 8 lanes. This is followed by the cities of Newton and Weston and a connection to the Massachusetts Turnpike at exit 25.
From there, I-95 turns northeast to Waltham and Lexington, and at Exit 29 connects to the 'oncord Turnpike and Massachusetts Route 2 . At Burlington, I-95 crosses US Highway 3 at Exit 32A and then continues northeast through Woburn and Reading .
There is again a connection to I-93, after which the I-95 again reduced to 6 lanes and in the further course by Wakefield , Lynnfield and Peabody results where the six-lane route 128 at the exit 45 with the aim of Gloucester again from the now only four-lane I-95.
From Peabody to Salisbury
After I-95 exits Route 128, it widens to 8 lanes and continues north through less populated areas of the state. The road leads to the towns of Danvers , Boxford , Georgetown , Rowley , Danvers , Newbury , West Newbury , Newburyport , Amesbury and Salisbury . Traffic density is usually quite low on this approximately 25 mi (40.2 km ) stretch. As part of the renewal of the John Greenleaf Whittier Bridge over the Merrimack River , the distance between exit no. 57 to the junction with I-495 was expanded from 6 to a width of 8 lanes.
The north end of I-495 is a Y-shaped connection to I-95 at exit 59 just before the New Hampshire border . Driving south at this point is via Exit 58 toward Massachusetts Route 110 West, which leads to Exit 55 on I-495. The northernmost exit of I-95 in Massachusetts is number 60 and provides a connection to Amesbury and Massachusetts Route 286 towards Salisbury Beach and Hampton Beach . After an underpass, I-95 crosses the state line to Seabrook (New Hampshire) .
history
The original plans were to run I-95 through downtown Boston through Readville and along the Southwest Corridor to Roxbury . From there, the plan was to continue east along the Southeast Expressway in South Bay , then north to the Central Artery at the intersection of the Massachusetts Turnpike . From there the connection to the Northeast Expressway in Charlestown along the banks of the Charles River was planned.
However, in 1972, then Governor Francis W. Sargent abandoned all plans for interstate highways within the Massachusetts Route 128 route due to local protests (with the exception of I-93 ). The only sections completed by the predecessor organizations of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation were the Northeast Expressway from Charlestown to Saugus (now part of US Highway 1 ) and the Central Artery , which separates Boston's North End from downtown.
From 1972 to 1974 the new plans provided for the I-95 to run along a northern extension of the Northeast Expressway to Route 128 in the north-west of Danvers . At that time the I-95 officially ran from Canton to Braintree and north along the Southeast Expressway from Braintree to Boston, then followed the Central Artery and continued along the Northeast Expressway in Boston, Chelsea and Revere .
However, when the expansion of the Northeast Expressway between Saugus and Danvers was abandoned in 1974, the route of the I-95 was given its current form. I-93 was extended to meet I-95 in Canton . On the way from the end of the Northeast Expressway to the Saugus River in Saugus , traces of these plans can still be seen today - along the undeveloped route from Saugus to Route 128 there are unused bridges, ramps into nowhere and already straightened, but unpaved roads, which should pick up I-95.
