In the 19th century the population rose from around 450 in 1800 to over 1000 in 1900. Due to the proximity to the city of Angoulême and comparatively low real estate prices, the population of the municipality increased to over 5,000 in the 20th century.

economy

The community was dominated by agriculture for centuries; there were also several limestone quarries . Currently, however, several small and medium-sized companies that have settled in an industrial area ( zone d'activité ) in the north of the municipality determine the economic activity of the place, which is otherwise characterized by small trade, crafts and small service companies.

history

An obelisk-like stele found on the Plateau de Bel-Air dates from Gallic or Gallo-Roman times; it is now in the Musée d'Angoulême . The Romanesque church proves the medieval existence of the place; a castle ( château ) from this period was already destroyed in the Hundred Years War (1337-1453).

  • The parish church of Saint-Michel is a Romanesque building from the 12th century built from precisely hewn natural stone with a defensive-looking, unadorned, undivided and almost square west facade and an inconspicuous portal, which is framed by cautiously profiled side services and covered by a profiled blind arch . The nave is spanned by a barrel vault, which is clearly pointed at the apex, with thick, unprofiled girders ; The flat-closing apse , on the other hand, has a high Gothic, slightly dome-shaped rib vault .
  • The furnishings of the church include an altogether rather rural-looking, but in parts finely worked statue of the Virgin .
  • The Logis de Pindray is a late medieval country estate that was built on the site of the castle that was destroyed in the Hundred Years War, and the buildings of which have been restored and changed over time. The representative facade of the residential building ( corps de logis ) was not added until the 19th century.
  • The Logis des Mérigots was formerly owned by the Knights Templar and, after its dissolution in 1312, served as a hospital for lepers ( maladrerie ) for centuries until it was privately owned in the 18th century. In the entrance area there is a wrought iron grille from the 18th century that was listed as a historical monument in 2005 and was originally made for the Abbaye de Beaulieu in the center of Angoulême , which no longer exists .
  • The Logis de Bois Menu , which was built in the 16th century but has been repeatedly modified since then , has a polygonal tower from the Renaissance .
