List of Stanley Cup winners
The Stanley Cup is awarded each year to the winner of the National Hockey League play-off tournament .
The first Stanley Cup playoff game started on March 22, 1894. The Stanley Cup had been donated two years earlier, on March 18, 1892, by Frederik Arthur Stanley, Baron Stanley of Preston . In the beginning, the cup was awarded as a trophy for the best amateur hockey team in Canada. Professional teams have been competing to win the cup since 1910. Since the 1926/1927 season, the NHL has played the winner of the cup among themselves, as the only remaining competitive league, the WHL, stopped playing. In 1947 the NHL got the exclusive rights to the Stanley Cup.
