List of armed forces
The list of armed forces contains the armed forces of the states as well as their manpower and military budgets as up-to-date as possible. In addition, information such as the status as a nuclear power , special features such as a militia system and membership in military alliances are presented. The stated strengths indicate the peace strength (without reserves or paramilitary units).
General information on the use of the list
- In the basic sorting, the countries are grouped according to their location on the continents and listed alphabetically in ascending order.
- This list is intended to provide a quick overview by specifying the troop strength and the military budget and enable rough comparisons. Above all, it should be a bundled collection of links to all articles on armed forces in Wikipedia.
- Many countries in the world keep precise information about their troop strengths secret, for example the strengths for China are based on American intelligence estimates. Other countries publish the exact numbers of their armed forces (such as Great Britain or Germany).
- The amount of the defense budget is to be understood as a guideline, as it often receives funds from other departments (sometimes indirectly). In particular, small countries with weak economies are often supported by larger countries with military aid.
- The number of troops is of little relevance to the actual strength of the armed forces. Critical factors such as the ability to reconnaissance , networked operations management and operating at high speed on the battlefield are not included in these figures. The budgets can only provide an indication of the efficiency of the armed forces. To do this, they must be set in relation to the number of troops and viewed against the background that different forms of defense ( professional army - conscription army ) or armament-related features (nuclear power, share of sea or air forces , armaments industry) result in completely different financial requirements.
- Countries not on this list do not maintain any armed forces or any units that can be designated as armed forces. In the case of very small and island states in particular, the transition between the military and the police is often fluid; in such cases, a note is given as a police character or the country is on the list of states without a military .
