The Neo Magazin Royale was a satirical late-night show moderated by Jan Böhmermann , which was produced in Cologne - Ehrenfeld and broadcast weekly on ZDFneo between October 31, 2013 and December 12, 2019 and was made available in advance in the ZDFmediathek . The show had been named Royale since February 5, 2015. In addition, the show has since been produced in a larger studio and Böhmermann has been supported by a live band. Furthermore, the ZDF repeated the current episode on Friday night since the renaming.

In September 2019 it was announced that the program would end after six years, as Böhmermann will switch to the ZDF main program with a follow-up program under the name ZDF Magazin . The last edition of the show was released on December 12, 2019.

concept

The program usually began with the intro, sometimes (mostly after a break in production) a film or a short introduction was shown instead. After the intro , Böhmermann satirically commented on current events (stand-up). Mostly joking films, studio actions or songs performed in the studio followed (see sections and content ). At the end of the program there was a short interview with the guest (less often with the guests). Occasionally, after the interview, Böhmermann competed against the guest in a game or a musician or band performed. An internet special with the guests appeared on the Tuesday after the broadcast. This usually continued the game or interview from the previous broadcast. Since the show had its own live band with Dendemann & Die Free Radicals , they played the theme song, which was mostly extended until Böhmermann appeared. In addition, the themes of the stand-up or the songs were often taken up and played while Böhmermann changed his position in the studio. Since 2016 the Rundfunk-Tanzorchester Ehrenfeld has been responsible for the theme song. Since October 2015, the program has been 40 minutes instead of 30 minutes. Since the second season, the broadcast has been extended by another 5 minutes to 45 minutes.

In previous seasons, the program was mostly started and often ended with an often critical comment by speaker and actor William Cohn on current TV events or the previous program (s) in the style of broadcast announcers. Until the summer break of 2018, the guests were presented with a short clip.

Origin of Neo Magazine

The program title and individual stylistic features were based on the ZDF magazine moderated by Gerhard Löwenthal until 1988 . According to Böhmermann, his attitude was: “We are television. What we say is right! ”And is also demonstrated by him.

The title melody of the ZDF magazine , Witold Lutosławski's 1st movement of the Concerto for Orchestra , was adopted slightly changed and used until the 2014 winter break. The appearance was partly based on that magazine, but was modified over the years and since the reboot as Neo Magazin Royale and the change of studio it hardly reminds of the ZDF magazine . The intro theme has been fundamentally changed and consists of samples (including Fatboy Slim , The Rockafeller Skank ), the Lutosławski motif is only briefly alluded to at the end of the opening credits.

Categories and content

The Neo Magazin Royale contained recurring rubrics that either took place in the studio by Böhmermann (sometimes with the involvement of the ensemble), consisted of feature films, or both. The audience was often included in the rubrics in the studio. Often these were introduced by a separate intro and ended by an outro . Recurring clips also usually had an intro. Many were slightly revised with the renaming to Neo Magazin Royale and provided with new end images, which show the column name. In addition, there were various formats without their own intro that recurred at irregular intervals.

Recurring sections

These sections were a regular part of the program, often since the first season of Neo magazine.

Prism is a dancer
Böhmermann made viewers in the audience aware of their presence on the Internet, which had been researched beforehand. In most cases, the participant received a suitable gift after showing his presence or was included in a thematically appropriate studio activity. The title of the rubric was a corruption of Rhythm Is a Dancer by Snap! , Used the refrain as a jingle and played on in the course of monitoring and espionage in 2013 became known NSA program PRISM on.
In the 2015 Christmas edition, the rubric “Chrism Is a Santa” (for example: “Christianity is a Santa Claus”) was mentioned. The 2014 Christmas edition was called "Chrism Is a dancer".
Since 2017, individual episodes under the title "Let yourself be monitored - The Prism Is A Dancer Show" deal completely with this format. As of 2018, an independent show was broadcast under the same title . In addition, there was the quizzes with PRISM section in which various questions about people in the audience had to be answered.
Internet hub
Böhmermann first presented the ASCII character of the week, followed by a top 5 ranking of various topics on the Internet (e.g. the five best animated GIF images or the five most popular WLAN names). Often another thing of the month was introduced after the ASCII character of the week, such as the emoji of the month or the function key of the month.
Trend volcano middle
The "hottest" (but fictional) trends from Berlin-Mitte were presented. In addition, a male and female audience viewer was shown, who supposedly wore the latest “look” from Mitte, which was commented on by Böhmermann. In addition, (also fictitious) words for young people were presented, which referred to historical events.
Make a decision!
Böhmermann and the guest or guests had to answer either-or questions that were pulled out of a hat. The questions often consisted of puns and were often related to current events or celebrities.
Craft Brothers
Marcel Magic and Simon Spectacular presented simple handicraft ideas in short clips. These consisted mostly of everyday objects and, with a lot of imagination, resemble what they are supposed to represent. Examples are a bobby car , attached to the back with adhesive tape, as a Transformers costume or a tampon , stapled to a sanitary napkin , as a butterfly. Several ideas were shown in one broadcast, interrupted by short presentations by Böhmermann.
Each edition had a special subtitle (e.g. “Alaaf Edition” or “Between the Years Edition”).
Marcel Magic and Simon Spectacular (actually Marcel Lenz and Simon Rupieper) both worked as production designers for the show.
The Bastel Brothers have their own Twitter account, in which mostly the clips from the show are tweeted as animated images.

Photoshop Philipp
Photoshop Philipp, a stereotypical nerd , created - accompanied by a song sung by Böhmermann - various printed works with the help of the image processing software Adobe Photoshop . The content parodied real works, for example from magazines.
In episode -990 (Neo Magazin Royale episode 2x10) " MS-DOS Manfred" and his 286s were introduced as parents .
In episode 67 " Flash Player Fabian" appeared.
Böhmermann and the Jadebuben, Neo Magazin Royale Nerdchor
Jan Böhmermann sang a piece by a well-known rapper, which was performed a cappella together with a male choir .
The little man
Hans Meiser as the “little man” in the sharpener on Böhmermann's desk discussed current issues with him. In doing so, Meiser took over current standpoints of the media landscape without reflection and pointed to a regular table level . While Böhmermann tried to refute this with facts, Meiser did not deviate from his views and reacted to these replies with incomprehension. Meiser often changes his statements and positions between the broadcasts. Meiser usually ends the conversation with the words “poor Germany, poor Germany”. The production company suspended its collaboration with Meiser in May 2017 when it became known that he had been recording spots for an online portal that spreads right-wing populist conspiracy theories .
The beef carrier
Florentin Will as the beef carrier delivered the latest mail to Jan Böhmermann in the studio. These were not normal letters, but comments directed against Böhmermann (so-called beef). After the sound of a sample of the Marvelettes' song Please Mr. Postman , an exaggerated dialogue between Will and Böhmermann followed, which expressed his surprise. Böhmermann's question as to whether there was also beef for him, answered yes and then presented the beef, mostly a letter or another medium, including the sender and a brief summary of the beef. Böhmermann mostly answered these questions with pen and ink.
Viral or no matter
Florentin Will as a “click millionaire” had the number of views of YouTube videos guessed. Jan Böhmermann competed against the respective guest (s).
Print alert
Böhmermann supposedly presented current developments in the magazine industry. A current issue of a magazine served as a template, from which fictitious imitators were usually shown and discussed.
Either-or games
Böhmermann and the respective guest were asked either-or questions by an ensemble member, the answer of which had to be guessed. Whoever answered most of the questions correctly won. The principle was played with various topics. For example, it can be decided for people whether they are “moderator or murderer?”, “Pop singer or serial killer” or “dead or not dead?”. The question topic was mostly adapted to the guest.

Parodies

Clips that explicitly refer to one or more real role models on television or the Internet.

Williams internet corner
In this section, William Cohn introduces the Internet in the style of the 1990s. He goes into internet phenomena - such as the Nyan Cat or the Star Wars Kid - by reenacting them himself. There is a 10-hour version of a video of the Nyan Cat parody, which is only 9 hours and 21 minutes long.
Real facts with Florentin Ulfkotte
Florentin Will clarifies in the style of the mystery program X-Factor: The Inconceivable the viewer about supposedly true facts and their connections, which are based on conspiracy theories and half-truths. Most of the “true facts” are derived from the smallest of indications. The chains of evidence always end with Michelle Obama . Will speaks English and synchronizes himself into German in a voiceover . The character's name is an allusion to the journalist and conspiracy theorist Udo Ulfkotte .
The digital quartet
Four older, upper-class actors, sitting in an antique castle room, act out real discussions from the Internet (such as YouTube comments). It is pointed out in advance that the texts are unchanged in terms of both content and grammar.

William Cohn parodies the 1980s- style Today + broadcast . Today's target audience - are viewers over 40 years of age.
Steel eggs
Böhmermann comments factually, but with an ironic-sarcastic undertone, on the work of a person with reference to a current topic, such as Campino and the Band Aid project or Tom Beck and his work on YouTube . A steel wall with various representations is displayed to the right of Böhmermann. These representations show thematically appropriate images of the named persons or facts, which supplement or consciously contradict Böhmermann's comment. Often there is a sound-image scissors between the presentations and Böhmermann's speeches, which mostly aim at the actual opinion of Böhmermann or the public perception on the respective topic. The Colbert Report with its segment "The Word" served as a model here.
After the issue of the Band Aid project, the comments were processed into a diss track within the Neo Wagazin section .
Since season 2 of the Neo Magazin Royale there are almost identical categories with the names "Neo Magazin Royale - Universal Dictionary, Deutsch - German, German - Deutsch", "Die Neo Magazin Royale Tele-Lupe" and "Deliberately hurting". The only difference here is the intro and the appearance of the “wall” displayed, but with a focus on other topics such as the German language or television in general.
The television emergency aid
According to the motto “We have the ideas, they have the quota”, the attempt is made to smuggle videos produced or modified by the team of Neo Magazin Royale into other programs so that they do not recognize the true source. After the program has been broadcast, this section will be broadcast and the (partly fictitious) making-of of the video will be shown and Neo Magazin claims to be the author. So at TV total an alleged Chinese copy of its show, in particular the rubric "Embarrassing or cashing" (show 17), was smuggled in, but it was completely produced by Neo magazine . So far, this column has often been received by other media. See #Varoufake and #Verafake .

Zini the Wuslon
The character comes from the children's show Fun on Tuesday and is always advertised by Böhmermann as an expert on political issues and interviewed by him seriously. The humor arises from Zini's coarse answers, which insult Böhmermann extravagantly and extravagantly and reveal a strongly polemic right-wing extremist background. Zini also frequently mentions his extensive drug use.
Big tits - the equality magazine
On the occasion of the discontinuation of ML Mona Lisa, Böhmermann and Giulia Becker bring “a platform that allows both genders to have their say.” On the occasion of International Women's Day, the 2018 section was produced again. This time, however, Sophie Passmann was Böhmermann's opponent.
Scorched Earth with Florentin W.
Parody of investigative articles from reportage magazines with Florentin Will as reporter. Everyday processes behind the scenes of the show are shown in an exaggeratedly dramatized manner, with Will presenting the topic exclusively critically to Neo Magazin Royale . The facts presented are often very absurd and the actors shown in the program are arrogant towards the reporter. In the end, Böhmermann always flees before taking a position using different means of transport.
Dr. Internet - Internet counseling with William Domain
Parody of Dr. Sommer and Jürgen Domian by William Cohn. He reads questions from various Internet forums and answers them often sexually suggestive in the style of Domian .
File number http unsolved

In addition, just like in the US series, Böhmermann gives his thoughts and opinions about the earlier events.
TKKabelka

The ZDF animal criticism with Dr. Margot Dokthor
Giulia Becker as Dr. Margot Dokthor criticizes animal species. It is assumed that the animals should behave like humans, consequently their non-abilities are listed and finally their right to exist is questioned. Reference is made here to various knowledge programs and commentators.

Who am I?
In the game, the famous former game show Who Am I? modeled on it, it's about guessing a person. Jan Böhmermann and his guest each have a headband with a picture of a celebrity from the guest's business, which they cannot see. By asking the opponent, which can only be answered with “yes” or “no”, you have to guess the person on your headband. They do this as long as the opponent answers "yes", if "no" the player changes. The first to guess the person wins.
Heart quake - Who's the coolest?
In the game, named after a song by Helene Fischer , the aim of the candidates is to have the calmest possible pulse in different situations.
Who costs the world
In the game, based on the film What Costs the World , Böhmermann and the guest are concerned with guessing the edible objects from various objects lying on two tables in front of them. The selected objects must be bitten without touching them to confirm the tip. The items are served by Ralf Kabelka as a waiter.
Google duel
Parody of the family duel with Google searches. Candidates have to guess the ends of a sentence that started with the Google search engine. Each candidate has the opportunity to answer wrong three times, then the opponent wins. This is not about the exact match, but about certain keywords that must appear. There are a total of five solutions per task, which were selected by the editorial team.

This section is based heavily on the corresponding YouTube formats and is available on Tuesdays after the broadcast.
This section did not have its own intro until February 19, 2014 and was recorded in the studio together with the guest and put online on the following day of the broadcast. From February 20, 2015 (episode 28), the rubric was completely redesigned to its current form. : Since season 2 of Neo Magazin Royale this section has been replaced by The Judgment .

Bet that..?

On October 11, 2016, ZDF announced that a special edition of Neo Magazin Royale with the subtitle Wetten, dass ..? will be produced. The show was shown as a recording split over two broadcast dates on October 13 and 20, 2016. The guests were the model Eva Padberg , the politician Jens Spahn , the moderator Ulrich Wickert , the musician DJ Bobo and the rapper Eko Fresh .

Production and publication

Former logo of Neo magazine
  • The broadcast time was around 30 minutes until October 22, 2015 and was extended by 10 minutes at that time. Since February 4, 2016, the broadcast time has been extended to around 44 minutes.
  • The spokesman for the show William Cohn already worked at Roche & Böhmermann and was also the Böhmermann sidekick from episode five of Neo Magazin and up to episode 34 of Neo Magazin Royale .
  • For the first time on November 21, 2013 , the Lateline, also moderated by Jan Böhmermann, ran simultaneously on EinsPlus . At the end of 2013, Böhmermann ended his work at Lateline.
  • In addition to the show's official Twitter account, other accounts are operated. The Bastel Brothers, the Neo Wagazin, Adi (alluding to Sami Slimani) and neoleaks (alluding to WikiLeaks ) have their own Twitter accounts. However, these have not been active since at least May 2018.

Controversy

#Varoufake

In March 2015, the program sparked a public, partly political controversy through a satirical contribution when it was alleged that a video presented by Günther Jauch in his program , on which the then Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis showed the finger , was from Neo-Magazin- Royale team has been rigged.

Later it turned out that the video was real, which was also confirmed by the organizers of the Subversive Festival in Zagreb , where the video was made. ZDF emphasized that the program was about satire. Many commentators saw the action as an ingenious media satire. The Wiener Zeitung Online wrote that it was “probably the most brilliant PR coup in TV history”. Böhmermann had succeeded in the feat of "making the alibi journalism of the TV talk shows just as ridiculous as the indignation-driven reporting of the online media in one wash." The 2016 Grimme Prize was awarded for this satirical contribution in the “Innovation” category.

I have police

The satirical rap song Ich hab Polizei , sung by Böhmermann , the music video of which was published in the edition on November 26, 2015 under the stage name POL1Z1STENS0HN , met with a wide response in the media and was controversial. The song was in sixth place in GfK Entertainment's download ranking in the first week . In the German single charts it rose to number 10 on December 4th.

Erdoğan poem abuse criticism

The broadcast of March 31, 2016 was removed just a few hours after it was published in the media library. This step was justified by the fact that Böhmermann's poem Schmähkritik on Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan did not meet ZDF's demands for satire or parody. Videos of the contribution that were published by third parties on the Internet platform YouTube were also removed by ZDF. The production company bildundtonfabrik had previously claimed that the program was not available due to technical problems. In the rerun on ZDF on the night of April 1, 2016, a version shortened by 4:41 minutes was broadcast. On April 2, 2016, the program was returned to the media library in this abridged version.

The reactions in politics and the press ranged from criticism of Böhmermann's poem to the accusation of self-censorship because of the removal of the contribution from the media library by ZDF and criticism of the joint assessment by Angela Merkel and Erdoğan to recognition for a game by Böhmermann with limits to satire . The poem was the subject of both criminal and civil legal proceedings.

#Verafake

In the broadcast on May 12, 2016, Böhmermann announced under the hashtag #verafake that he had smuggled a candidate into the RTL broadcast wanted daughter-in-law hosted by Vera Int-Veen . The candidate Robin, who was presented at the age of 21 in the program on April 10, 2016, is the 30-year-old actor Simon Steinhorst . His supposed father René was played by the 55-year-old actor Andreas Schneiders. The team from Neo Magazin Royale (named “Team Royaleraff” based on the RTL production Team Wallraff - Reporter undercover ) had rented an apartment in the Ruhr area and furnished it to match the candidate. In the report that was then shown, which showed the work of the production company with hidden cameras, it became known, among other things, that the candidates should receive an expense allowance totaling 150 euros for the 10 to a maximum of 30 days of shooting. In contrast, RTL demanded from advertisers up to 90,000 euros per minute in the corresponding broadcast time. In addition, candidates would have to submit an affidavit that they are in full possession of their intellectual abilities. Although the alleged father stated that he drank eight bottles of beer every day, the editor noted in the questionnaire that he did not consume alcohol every day. The alleged applicants only received the signed contract back after the program had been broadcast - around two months after it was signed.

When asked by the media magazine DWDL.de , RTL spokesman Christian Körner stated that the broadcast episode should first be checked and, if necessary, the producers should be consulted before commenting on the matter. On May 13, 2016, RTL removed the program relating to the smuggled candidate from its media library.

As a result of the disclosure, the Lower Saxony State Media Authority (NLM) initiated a preliminary examination. NLM Director Andreas Fischer criticized: "The way in which the production company concludes contracts with the candidates and presses them in doing so is strongly reminiscent of door- to- door sales ." The NLM had therefore requested the contract that the production company Warner Bros. International Television Production Germany concludes with the candidates on the show.

Video games

On December 16, 2015, the Bildundtonfabrik published what it claims to be the first part of a video game series for the television program entitled Das Neo Magazin Game Royale - Hunters of the Lost Bald Head . It was licensed by ZDF Enterprises and officially presented on the show as part of the season finale of the first season of Neo Magazin Royale.

The second game, The Secret of Jannis Island, followed a year later on December 15, 2016 as a browser version. Similar to its predecessor, the second part of the series is again in the C64 style. Versions for smartphones and all common operating systems followed on December 22, 2016.

Both games are available for Android , iOS , Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X are available. While the first game can be downloaded for free, the Android and iOS versions cost 1.99 euros, the Steam and macOS versions of the second game 4.99 euros. The playing time is specified as up to three hours, but in practice this value is less.

The two games are a point-and-click adventure in the style of a retro game , which can be controlled with the mouse or the touchscreen. You control the moderator Jan Böhmermann.

The third game Jump & Jan was published on September 5, 2019 for browsers and on September 12 for iOS and Android, here you also control Böhmermann.

Game Royale - Hunter of the Lost Bald Head

Jan Böhmermann has to bring the program book to William Cohn shortly before the program begins; however, this cannot be found. Böhmermann finds Cohn in the quota cellar . He drank himself into a coma with Glump alcohol . In order to take part in the show, the player must find all the items for a counter-glump and mix them up. During the game you will meet some well-known characters from the show, such as the Beefträger , Captain Obvious , the Bastelbrothers or the POL1Z1STENS0HN . The game is accompanied by many allusions to the show and jokes from Böhmermann.

The game ends with a cliffhanger : Böhmermann is kidnapped immediately before the broadcast begins and the kidnappers demand 1 billion euros from the GEZ surplus account with a ransom note.

Game Royale - The Secret of Jannis Island

The second part of the game begins immediately at the end of the first part. Böhmermann wakes up with no memory whatsoever on an abandoned South Sea island.

In a subplot you control William Cohn, who wants to save his friend.

Game Royale 3 - Jump & Jan

The third part of the game, contrary to the previous one, is a jump 'n' run through various worlds in the cosmos of Neo Magazin Royale, such as the studio, cyberspace or the island world of the previous games. The player collects radio contributions and has to defeat various television stars (such as Frank Elstner ).

In addition to Böhmermann and Cohn, Gronkh and “Zini das Wuslon” also perform.
