history

On the Schwäbsche Eisebahne - sculpture in Meckenbeuren

The community was first mentioned as such in 1496, but as early as 879 a document from the St. Gallen Monastery lists a settler named Megi who lived here . Whether the name Meckenbeuren can be traced back to this is disputed. However, the date August 4, 1278 for the first documented mention of the name "Meckenburron" can be regarded as certain. The corresponding document is in the main state archive in Stuttgart. This is issued by Pope Nicholas III. and was requested by the then abbot of Weingarten monastery, Hermann von Bichtenweiler, in Rome to secure the monastery properties. "Meckenburron" is certainly today's Meckenbeuren.

Probably from 1094 the area belonged to Weingarten Monastery . In 1530 it was sold to Count Haug von Montfort for 3,100 guilders and thus became part of the County of Montfort .

In 1780 the indebted House of Montfort had to cede its goods to the Austrian foothills . Under Napoleon , the community fell to Bavaria in 1806 , which it ceded to Württemberg in the corresponding border treaty in 1810 . When the new administrative structure was implemented , the place was assigned to the Tettnang District Office.

The railroad brought the community a decisive growth spurt. The station on the southern line from Ulm to Friedrichshafen in 1847 established the connection to the still young route network of the Württemberg State Railways . The folk song " Auf de Schwäbsche Eisebahne " also mentions Meckenbeuren in the refrain. In 1895, the Meckenbeuren – Tettnang railway line, which has now been closed, was Germany's first electrically operated full- line railway .

During the district reform during the Nazi era in Württemberg , Meckenbeuren came to the Friedrichshafen district in 1938 , which was again called Tettnang district from 1945 onwards. After the Second World War, Meckenbeuren was part of the French occupation zone and thus became part of the newly founded state of Württemberg-Hohenzollern in 1947 , which in 1952 became part of the administrative district of Südwürttemberg-Hohenzollern of the new federal state of Baden-Württemberg.

On May 1, 1972, the previously independent municipality of Kehlen was incorporated into Meckenbeuren.

In 1973 the district reform took place in Baden-Württemberg , when Meckenbeuren became part of the Lake Constance district.

Religion and churches

Meckenbeuren has always been shaped by Roman Catholicism . The Catholic parishes of St. Maria in Meckenbeuren, St. Jakobus in Brochenzell and St. Verena in Kehlen are located in the community. The three parishes form the pastoral care unit Meckenbeuren and belong to the diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart .

The parish church of St. Maria bears the patronage of St. Mary of the Perpetual Help and was built in the years 1912/13 according to the plans of the Stuttgart building officer Ulrich Pohlhammer in the neo-baroque style. The previous building of the parish church, which was located to the west on today's church square, was dedicated to Our Lady of Meckenbeuren and was built in 1873. The most important piece of equipment in the so-called “Kappele” was the “Painful Mother of God” from the Löwental Monastery . According to oral tradition, this statue, which is now in the left aisle of the parish church, is associated with several answers to prayer. In addition to the parish church of St. Maria, there is also the chapel Maria Königin des Friedens in the suburb of Obermeckenbeuren.

The parish church of St. Jakobus Maior in the Brochenzell suburb dates back to the late Romanesque era. The current appearance goes back to a renovation by the Lords of Humpis in 1624 and the Baroque transformation in 1734. In 1971, the originally east-facing church was supplemented by an extension, with the former nave being converted into the new choir. In addition to numerous liturgical art objects, the rosary altar from the Löwental monastery is particularly noteworthy.

The parish church of St. Verena in Kehlen, the roots of which go back far beyond two previous buildings, is a special architectural church building. It was built in 1958 in the brutalist style. It was planned by the Kammerer-Belz office in Stuttgart.

Some areas of the political community also belong to the parishes of St. Johannes in Ravensburg-Obereschach, St. Walburga in Ravensburg-Gornhofen, St. Margaretha in Tettnang-Obereisenbach, St. Gallus in Tettnang and St. Maria in Eriskirch-Mariabrunn.

The Protestant Christians living in the parish are members of the Protestant parishes of Meckenbeuren and Tettnang.

coat of arms

Meckenbeuren coat of arms

The municipality of Meckenbeuren was awarded the coat of arms, which is still used today, in 1938.

Description of coat of arms : In the split shield in front in silver (white) a three-lobed red flag, behind in red an upright silver (white) greyhound with a black collar.

The three-lobed flag, also known as the church flag , is borrowed from the coat of arms of the Counts of Montfort , to whose rule the eastern part of the municipality belonged from 1539 to 1780. The greyhound comes from the coat of arms of the Humpis family (also Huntpiss) , who owned the Brochenzell estate from the 15th to the 18th centuries .

The municipality of Kehlen was given a coat of arms in 1948, which should symbolize the connection between the two parts of the municipality on the left and right of the Schussen . Description: In silver (white) over a blue shield base, a red brick bridge with a whole arch in the middle and half an arch on each side . The coat of arms has not been officially used since the municipality was dissolved in 1972, but it is used unofficially as the local coat of arms.
