Buddy Bears (from 2001)
There are several Buddy Bears in Spandau . The Buddy Bear is an individually painted, life-size bear made of fiberglass. In 2001 the Buddy Bear Campaign was initiated by Eva and Klaus Herlitz . The bears were painted by around 350 artists and then placed all over Berlin. The aim of the campaign is to support children's aid organizations through auctions. In the meantime, buddy bears can be found all over the world as ambassadors for Berlin, especially in company branches, hotels or private gardens. All Buddy Bears are produced by Buddy Bär Berlin GmbH at Gartenfelder Strasse 29 in Berlin-Spandau .

Dismantled sculptures / ornamental fountains / buddy bears
During the Second World War , the district did not experience losses of sculptures directly from the effects of the war, but from so-called “non-ferrous metal collections”, the metal donation made by the German people , with which the high demand for metals for war production was to be covered. As early as the decree of August 28, 1939, the Berlin district authorities had to report monuments and sculptures made of bronze or copper that were suitable for a metal donation. 16 monuments, sculptures and fountains were reported for Spandau. On May 3, 1941, the district offices received a list of the objects to be melted down. The specific art objects were then demolished and melted down between September 8 and October 20, 1942. On December 12, 1944, the meltdown was officially ended.

Illustration | Ceramic column | Column with ceramic plates , 1937 | Gottfried caps | Dismantled, former location: Heerstraße , western corner with Pichelsdorfer Straße ( Wilhelmstadt ). The pillar erected on June 1, 1937 with the shape of a hexagon was primarily intended to draw the road users' attention to Spandau, which is located off the Heerstraße. It was meant to be a revival of the ancient custom of milestones . Six ceramic plates (fired, glazed clay) were placed in three rows one above the other . The history, trade, industry and landscape of Spandau were represented symbolically; the city arms of Spandau and Velten formed the end of the actual column. The crown of the column was a globe tilted in the inclination of the ecliptic , around which a ribbon with twelve constellations wound at the equator . In the middle was the words “Visits Spandau!”. The four-meter-high column was badly damaged by fire during World War II . The demolition took place in 1958, because a reconstruction failed because of excessive costs; the ceramic plates that have been preserved have been in the Spandau Local History Museum since then.
Efforts have been made since 2012 to rebuild the pillar at its original location. |
