Wayne County is a county in the state of Nebraska in the United States . The county seat is Wayne .

The county is located in northeast Nebraska and covers an area of 1149 square kilometers with no significant water surface. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Dixon County , Thurston County , Cuming County , Stanton County , Pierce County, and Cedar County .

history

Wayne County was formed in 1867. It was named after General Anthony Wayne .

Wayne County had 9,851 people as of the 2000 census . Of these, 1,225 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 3,437 households and 2,206 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.78 percent white, 0.94 percent African American, 0.35 percent Native American, 0.35 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.85 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.72 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.48 percent of the population.

Of the 3,437 households, 30.5 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 56.2 percent were married couples living together, 5.4 percent were single mothers, 35.8 percent were non-families, 25.1 percent were single households and 10.6 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.02.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 21.6 percent of residents under the age of 18, 25.4 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 21.2 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 18.0 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 13.7 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 28 years. For every 100 females there were 92.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 92.3 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 32,366 , and the median income for a family is $ 43,840. Males had a median income of $ 27,848 versus $ 20,376 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,644. 7.4 percent of families and 14.5 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 10.6 percent were children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 7.2 percent were people aged 65 and over.
