Bergen is a municipality in the Birkenfeld district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Herrstein-Rhaunen community .
Land use
Almost half of the community area is taken up by a forest area of around 4.5 km² , the rest of the agricultural area consists mainly of arable land .
history
Bergen was first mentioned in a document in 926, but traces of settlement go back to the 3rd millennium BC. BC back. The town of Staufenberg was formerly to the southwest .
After the Second World War , over sixty farms were still active in the village; there are currently only seven left, most of which are only run on a part-time basis.
Up until 1969, Bergen had its own elementary school. After its closure, the students were assigned to the nearby town of Kirn ( Bad Kreuznach district ).
In 1995, the Herrstein Association finally set up a two-group kindergarten with a capacity for 50 children aged three to six years, which is also open to the offspring of the neighboring villages of Berschweiler , Griebelschied and Sonnschied .
In addition, since 1995, mountain meetings have been held with eight German locations with this name.

Municipal council
The council in Bergen consists of eight council members, who in the local elections on May 26, 2019 in a majority vote were elected, and the directly elected honorary mayor as chairman.

Stephan Ruppenthal became the local mayor of Bergen in 2014. In the direct election on May 26, 2019, he was confirmed in his office for a further five years with a share of the vote of 88.19%.
Ruppenthal's predecessor Gerhard Friedt had held the office of mayor for 25 years.
Culture and club life
In addition to the SV 07 sports club , there is a support association for the Bergen Volunteer Fire Brigade , a fishing club , a rural women’s club and the Evangelical Women's Aid . In addition to the farms, there are several craft businesses and a restaurant with a guesthouse .
