Parts of Calhoun County are part of the eastern part of the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area called Metro-East around the city of St. Louis in neighboring Missouri .

The county is located on the western edge of Illinois and has an area of 735 square kilometers, of which 77 square kilometers are water. The county's western border is also the border with Missouri and is formed by the Mississippi River . To the east, the county is bounded by the Illinois River . history
Calhoun County was formed on January 10, 1825 from part of Pike County. It was named after John C. Calhoun (1782-1850), Secretary of War under President James Monroe (1817-1825), seventh Vice President of the United States under Presidents John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson (1825-1832) and Secretary of State under President John Tyler and James K. Polk (1844-1845).
From 1825 to 1847 Gilead was the seat of the county administration, then Hamburg briefly and Hardin in the same year.
