Claude Criquielion (born January 11, 1957 in Lessines , † February 18, 2015 in Aalst ) was a Belgian cyclist and road world champion from 1984. After his active career, he worked as a sports director and team manager. He died of a stroke .

biography

Criquielion began his professional career in 1979 with the Belgian cycling team Kas-Campagnolo . By the end of his career in 1991, he was victorious in 57 races .

His greatest success was winning the title at the professional world championships in Barcelona in 1984 , where he crossed the finish line 14 seconds ahead of Claudio Corti . The attempt to repeat this success failed at the World Championships in Ronse in 1988 , when he collided with Steve Bauer in a three-man leading group shortly before the finish , so that Maurizio Fondriest, who was not involved in the fall, became world champion. Criquielion, who only finished eleventh as a result of the fall, sued Bauer unsuccessfully over the incident.

Criquielion competed in the Tour de France every year between 1979 and 1990 and was able to finish the tour eleven times, including five times in the top ten. His best placement came in fifth on the Tour de France in 1986 . He achieved the best placements in the other Grand Tours as third in the Vuelta a España in 1980 and seventh in the Giro d'Italia in 1989 .

Criquielion was also successful with the classics . In 1987 he won the cobblestone race Tour of Flanders and in 1985 and 1989 the hilly Walloon Arrow .

For the 2000 season he took over the post of sports director at Team Lotto , where he stayed until the end of the 2004 season. In 2005 he became the sporting director of the Belgian team Landbouwkrediet-Colnago , where his son Mathieu was also employed as a cyclist.
